I do not support Discord getting involved in NFTs.
NFTs are not only problematic for all of the artists who use your platform for both business and social communication, but also for the environment. One NFT, Space Cat, which is essentially just a short gif, uses the energy equivalent to an EU resident's energy consumption for two months. NFTs are mostly sold using Ethereum, who's "proof of work" system consumes massive amounts of energy. The system Ethereum uses, forcing people to solve puzzles and create new blocks on the blockchain, is designed to be energy inefficient. Ethereum itself uses about as much electricity as the country of Libya, which has a population of almost 7 million people (https://www.theverge.com/2021/3/15/22328203/nft-cryptoart-ethereum-blockchain-climate-change). More NFT transactions could cause these emissions to increase even more, because of an increased demand. Which is the most basic principle of economics.
In addition to it's disastrous affect on our environment, NFTs are extremely harmful to artists. There are so many cases of people stealing others digital art to create NFTs without consent of the artist. One of the CREATORS behind the technology that created NFTs has written an article about how they are being abused and do NOT protect artists (https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/04/nfts-werent-supposed-end-like/618488/). When someone buys an NFT, they are not buying the actual art. They are buying a link to it. This link will probably not even be valid in a few years. I HIGHLY encourage those at Discord to read these articles and truly think about what they are getting themselves into by supporting NFTs. The vast majority of your user base does NOT want this.
