[Suggestion] A way to FINALLY fix Stream lag/bad quality
TL;DR:
Stop using H.264 and use Google's VP9 instead. Its simple as that.
Now for the longer explanation:
The H.264 codec, albeit faster to encode to, has a far worse quality, and slower decode speed(if you read this post you may notice VP9 is around 50% faster than H264 to decode) compared to VP9, which also has smaller file size for most cases.
Benefits of VP9 for discord:
-Better quality streams by default for everyone
-Less lag/GPU Usage, client side
-Less use of the network, which is beneficial for both mobile users and the servers
Cons:
-Discord's server would have its CPUs busy for about...10% longer? Which considering that you guys moved most stuff from GO to Rust recently, will barely be impactful.
And before anyone mentions "Oh but VP9 is owned by google", it is royalty free. If discord uses it, there'll be 0 legal issues.
PS: If VP9 wasn't good, youtube wouldn't use it.
