    This would unfortunately exacerbate an already incredibly rampant scam/bot account issue. Virtually all grown adults in the United States have a phone. Cellphone ownership is at right around roughly 97%, 85% of which are smart phones. There's really very few justifiable reasons to not have an active phone number (at least if you're American). You can obtain flip phones for as little as 20 bucks, and if you can't afford a cheap plastic flip phone, then you probably can't afford internet and a computer either.

    My point is, the vast majority of people have cellphones, those who don't represent a minority and as such there's not real reason to open the flood gates to bots to accommodate the handful of people that do not have cellphones.
