Why make joining threads even harder?

So removing the join threads pop up thingie with the update was fine but now there's just NO clear way to join a thread in mobile? The only way I can find to do it is to turn on the notifications which is so unintuitive it is actually frustrating. How is a new user supposed to figure it out exactly? Can't there just be a button?
