How the user ID works?

At the moment, the ID of 19 digits, but before it was of 18. Does this mean that even earlier it was 5 characters, for example. And does this id increase by one or is y chosen randomly? If with each account the number increases by 1, then why is the number so large? I doubt that there are a quintillion of accounts in the discord

  The ID's are called snowflakes and can be used to calculate the time the user/channel/server/message etc... was created. It is unique
