Discord Username Issues

Around an hour ago I was given access to the new Discord Username system. Immediately I tried to set a name I wanted and was told it was in use. I then tried a bunch of other usernames and was still not able to get any of them. I then tried some of my friend's usernames just to see if they were available as well, to again no success. This was a shock to me as a lot of my friends have names I've never seen used by anyone else on any other platform, so I'm shocked that all of their usernames would already be taken when the username system hasn't even been out for that long yet and I'm the first person to get it among all of them. I then decided I wanted to test if I was able to add these people using the taken username, only to be told those usernames don't exist. I am now really confused and quite frankly annoyed, why is it saying all of these usernames are taken when I can't actually add anyone by those usernames?
