Add options to undo the recent visual changes
Today, March 25th 2025, I got on discord to see a new visual overhaul, which is, unfortunately, worse in almost every way. There are a number of changes which at best are pointless, and at worst actually make it harder to use and navigate, which I shall lay out here. Options or reversions on any of these would be phenomenal. I shall include a screenshot with numbers as well, to make it more clear what I'm talking about.
1: The server bar on the left. My main issue is that it seems to be smaller now, making it harder to identify all the icons and thus navigate to the correct server. Additionally, the server icons are now rounded squares rather than circles. In addition to it being my personal opinion that it looks worse, this is a negative change because A: Many server icons had previously been designed to match the circle, and thus the icons no longer display as intended (Two examples of this are labelled as 1.1 and 1.2 in the image), and perhaps more crucially, the rounded circle previously occurred only on the server you had selected, making it very easy to determine which server you're on, however with there now being no variance, you can only use the small bar on the side of the image which is easy to miss. Granted, being unable to tell what server you're on from the side bar is not the most important feature (as you can likely tell from context, what channels or users appear), there's still no reason to remove it.
2: Your profile and user settings now appear in a bubble over the server list, instead of a small box below the channel list. Why? I personally think bubbles of this sort are ugly, as they simply break up the appearance so it looks like several separate things rather than one whole app, but additionally the contents of this box, which most people don't interact with terribly often, now take up more space than they did before, and more space than they need to. At least an option to make this more compact would be nice. I am aware that the new Compact UI density fixes this in some ways, but it also changes a number of other things, most notably the nearby channel list, in ways I don't like. There is no reason the size of these two things should be linked, so why aren't there options to adjust the two separately?
3: the server you are on is in a “bubble” now. Why? Again, I personally do not like bubbles like this, as it makes it look like the server you are on is somehow a separate thing from the channel list, when in fact both are part of Discord, and fairly major parts of it. In fact, the distinction between the channel you're on and more “universal” parts of discord was already clear, as the latter would be a different shade, and this didn't break it up as much so it was still clearly one app, but this has unfortunately been changed. Additionally, because of this double, the server name now displays twice (3.1 and 3.2), which is entirely unnecessary and more distracting than anything.
4: The search box is enlarged, larger than I feel it needs to be (though of course an option for this would be best), moving the the inbox and help buttons to the top of the screen, which is a far less efficient use of space. Even when setting the UI density to compact, this inexplicable lack of compactness remains. Because of this, and additionally the reduplicative server name, the top bar is larger than it was before, making it feel empty because of how little stuff is present there, especially considering how unnecessary it is. In combination with the bar below it (With the channel name, search box, etc.) being taller as well, the top of the screen feels far more disruptive now than it used to.
5: The chat box to type messages in is too large now, it's far larger than it needs to be to display the text in it. Previously, with a single line of text, a single capital letter was roughly 27% the height of the box, whereas now it's closer to 20. While you can change the text size, this does not solve the issue of the box taking up more space than it needs to (However as the box, strangely, does not change to match font size changes, it does lead to the box looking miniscule on larger font sizes and enormous on small ones, ideally it should either have its own adjustable size, or scale with the text, rather than remaining the same constant size regardless of text size), as everything else takes up more space as well; increasing font size and simultaneously decreasing zoom is better, but again that also affects other things, most notably the channel and server lists on the side, things I would rather not have shrunk, and which could ideally be adjusted independently.
6: This is the most subjective one, but with the user list now being identical in background shade to the main box of the text channel (6.1), and the channel list being identical in background shade to the server list (6.2), it A: Makes the whole app appear less symmetrical, B: Obscures the distinction between the user list and the text channel, making the former appear an extension of the latter, which it is not, and C: Makes the channel list appear more connected with the “universal” parts of discord, I.E. the server list and top bar, which again it is not, it should be more clearly connected with the server it is the channel list for.
