New Discord UI Update
As a long time Discord user I wished to share my feedback on the forced UI update. I have used Discord for years, and this new UI is of very poor quality compared to what was already there. It does have its benefits, such as extra customizability, but it has far more flaws and shortcomings.
UI spacing is VERY inconsistent, many boxes don't line up with each other (see attachments) and there is an IMMENSE amount of wasted space in the new UI. One example of wasted space is the server list on the left-hand side. Previously, the entire list's space was utilized quite well. Server icons were nice, big, and readable, with very little empty space around them. Now, there is an immense amount of pointless empty space - redundant padding that just looks *bad*.
The entire bar at the top of the screen is very jarring and out of place; with the text not even looking to be vertically centered right. In widening the top bar, and pushing the rest of the left-hand UI down, even more wasted screen space has been created. Elements which snugly fit into their place now hang awkwardly below where they previously sat. The Discord icon in the corner is no longer in the corner, for example. It looks bad.
The text for "<user> is typing..." should never have had its size changed. It is far too small compared to the rest of the app's text.
Much like server icons, DM notifications/icons have been shrunk as well. Profile pictures are HARDER to read now, even more so with the red ping number taking up basically an ENTIRE QUADRANT of the pfp - this is just outright an awful design choice and honestly an accessibility hinderance, as it significantly diminishes the 'at-a-glance' readability of "who the hell just DM'ed me".
Buttons such as the "Add Friend" and tabs in the Friends screen have far too much padding around the text now. That could be useful for some people, yes, but it should be an *option*. A *setting* that can be *changed*.
I could go on, finding tiny things to complain about. Tiny as they may be, they are still parts of the sum, so to say. This forced UI change is ridiculous. Many people are rightfully upset about it. There are some small goods in the new UI but ultimately it should've at the very least have been an opt-in feature. At the very least, much like a couple other social media platforms have done, you should allow us a setting that disables the new UI and reverts the app to the old UI.
This forced UI update sucks.
Do better, Discord.
