Grace Period for Deleted Channel Recovery

I would like to recover a channel that was deleted automatically by a bot! A member behaved poorly and I have no way of tracking the issue when half of the comments are gone! Please offer deleted channel recovery! Your community has been requesting this for at least 2 years (and I’m sure more) with no response and it is extremely disheartening given how difficult it is to get support in the first place!

i had a dnd channel that had a lot of info get deleted. i need that info as a dm, especially as a lot of my notes were lost recently. this needs to be a thing so i dont have to go through the hell of restoring notes and finding old info that isnt important enough to place in notes. so mad about losing that channel

Just happened to me. Reading all these testimonies, and it's not fair.

My story is strikingly similar to 『𝙻𝚊𝚖𝚋𝚎𝚗𝚝 𝚅𝚒𝚋𝚎𝚛』(ーΩμέγα)'s; but I only had 70 members, and the culprit was executing a plotted revenge. However, there was 242 channels and 70+ users. The guy used Xenon bot to 'load a backup' of a blank server (editor's note: Xenon has since been modified so that only owners can load backups). I had no idea I could ban the bot at the time– that would have saved things I had invested OVER A MONTH compiling– because I couldn't tell what was happening, and when it began to happen I thought he was joking around like he usually did until things started disappearing before my eyes. What I did instead was kick the user, but it just kept happening while I watched, dumbfounded and shaking and typing illegibly.

3 YEARS' WORTH of Courtroom Drama RP. Gone in less than a minute.

All that remained was bots' memories of custom commands and welcome messages.

This was 12 hours ago, by the way. Almost exactly 12 hours.

So if there was a 12 hour grace period, even that would be nice. I'd like to put things back to how they were, because there were EXTENSIVE stories in there that I was involved in, and was relying on Discord's promise to never automatically delete old messages (message permanence). This was so bad, I probably need to get my blood pressure checked, because I couldn't eat all day and my heart was having palpitations, my hands were shaking so much I couldn't do anything.

Oh, but it gets even better! The culprit had an alt who was still around, since Xenon never kicked or banned anybody. That one person started acting like they were a fellow victim of the tragedy, and I eventually wound up lending the the Staff role (which remained on the template). WHAT A FOOLISH ERROR. Behind our backs, while I'm trying to figure out how I can restore the channels, HE'S KICKING ALL THE MEMBERS THAT HE CAN.

There is irony to this tale, too, but this isn't the place for it.

Discord: What if we could get *complete* backups saved periodically for Nitro-boosted servers?

I so wish this was a thing because one of the people in a server of "friends" deleted our main chat and took away almost 2 years worth of chatting

Is this still not a thing?

server nuking is such a common issue, why has this not been done yet? (Also I recommend that the owner should be the only one who can access these backups, or that they are not deletable until the wait period is over, to stop these channels from just being deleted again) I don’t see why this is ignored, it’s such a common issue with a fairly easy fix!

Yeah it would be gr8 if that was a feature, there was a server that got deleted and it had alot of good memories in there

I really want a restore button cause our DND server with 3 years of conversations of friendship, storylines, and gaming went away in less than a few hours because some freshman decide it would be ok to take all other member’s roles away, name everyone to “join my server” and delete all chat and voice chat channels. I’m really annoyed with that :( so I really hope it doesn’t happen to me or anyone else again!

Definitely should be implemented! Also, to the people who say why this has 1K upvotes and isn't implemented, think of the 250 million users of Discord. 1K is only 0.0004 percent.

Recently, a friend of my brother's deleted a bunch of important channels that were almost a year old, so I support wholeheartedly of a grace period

I'm back again with another idea that no one asked for, what if "deleting" a channel wasn't an option anymore, but doing so simply removed all role permissions and hid the channel from anyone who wasn't an admin of the server for a period of 24 hours before the channel actually deleted itself? This seems like something much more doable than storing a backup of the channel after deletion.

C'mon Discord team I'm really really trying here, surely this is something thats feasable?

It's been 2 years, gets me wondering if they read this forum.

Wow. I had two channels with the same name. No idea how it happened. I specifically picked the second, basically empty one to delete. It deleted the first one with months of hard work in it.. Unreal.

This has be a feature. Me and my friends have created a discord server for 1 year now and we have worked very hard on it to make it how it is today. But this morning, one of the bots in our server was hacked, and the bot deleted all of the channels and advertised someone else's channel. All the work that we had done was completely erased and a mediocre server with quite some members had to be rebuilt from scratch. And it's not just me many people's servers get griefed every day and lots of hard work is permanently erased. So Discord if you do see this, please add this new feature. It would save so much pain and time.

hey, anyone knows how its possible that some member on server could delete text channel, without having permission to do that?

  • Sir Vyvre the Lone

It's possible they pulled one of the following tricks:

    • Create a backup role with additional permissions
    • Management of channels in a certain category, rather than server-wide
    • If they are the server owner, they don't need role permissions; they have power over administrators

there has to be some way to this with a bot right?

if a channel is deleted the bot overrides the delete function and sets the channel as private for all but server owner, then the owner could see in a log who deleted it and talk to them about why. then either restore or delete the channel.

do not know if it as easy to do with messages since there is no "in game" way to make a message private right? but maybe there is a way to make a buffer. so the bot copied the message then posted it again with the tag of the one originally posted it. then maybe in some way using the reply function to reply to the message over where the original post was just so people would know where the post was from.

    *edit: spelling

  • Guys I wrote to support@discord.com this and maybe you could copy and send it to them too! The more people send it, the faster they can fix the problem!
    Here's the text:
Hello! I know that many users had talked to you about this issue and I'm going to do it too becouse maybe if enough people do it you will fix it. It's about deleting channels. Often there are channels deleted by mistake, channels deleted by someone in the moderation out of revenge of some sort maybe after a fight, there are hackers and bots that specialize in deleting channels! And there are many more ways to lost a channel that is often a really valuable part of the server. There are memories, conversations and feelings on those channels that becouse of this issue we won't be able to get back. Some people lose YEARS of conversation becouse of a stupid mistake or a troll. We, the people upset by this problem propose that the channels that were deleted will be available to recover for a certain amount of time before the "true deletion" (which is the moment where the channels are no longer available to be recovered).
    Thank you for listening.
We're counting on you to fix this problem as fast as you can.

Someone just deleted a 5 years+ channel as a joke, it had so many things, so many memories, so many pictures about friends, I need a way to recover it, I really do need it.

This absolutely would be an amazing feature to have, but not just the channel, but it's contents as well obviously. I fully support this idea if it's reasonable

Going to append the suggestion that channels which were deleted prior to any update that pushes this change get that grace period as well. Given that records of the messages do exist, I wouldn't think it out of the question to allow recovery. That way, people who lost channels previously aren't left in the dust.

Discord it has been 3 years since this was suggested with 3000 plus upvotes please take your communities voice and allow it to be heard I had a mod accidentally delete channels he thought were notused and we can not undo...THERE NEEDS TO BE A GRACE PERIOD....This should be relatively easy change!

    2
  • Yatalu

Alternatively, instead of a "Deleted channel" section, there could be an "Undo" option in the audit log that stays there for ex. a week.

(If it's decided as such, a similar solution could be implemented for eg. undeleting messages or unbanning members. It prevents accidents, but also problems if a specific mod has been acting too strict or out of line.)

Just happened again. Thankfully I wasn't ever in the portion that got deleted, but still tragic for those who were.
