On Reddit an employee wrote 2 years ago that it is high on their priority list and pins were a major milestone for it..72 -
With Developer mode enabled you can already grab the link to a message. However when you post the url it doesn't show a preview of the content of that message. It's just a blue url.
So... the technology to link to a message is already there in the developer mode. It just needs a bit work.

I keep waiting and waiting for this, but it never comes. I want to because Discord has a lot of very nice other stuff. Like a lot, but it's missing the ability for me to reply with easily sourced and documented contextual information in a post, making the textual chat client... Well... Unable to be used. Using code blocks is simply not a good enough replacement over a right click and quote message pop-up option.
Skype has quoting, and for all its faults, makes its use as a day to day chat client a far better experience. It's a rather simple feature, especially for something built in electron, to add.
The advantages are more than superficial organization:
1) Multiple conversations can occur at once in a single room without a lot of confusion and minimal effort.
2) Conversations which span long periods of time, such as hours or days can more easily be read without trying to scroll through other conversations.
3) Guaranteed integrity of the quoted message.
4) Attempting to look up the context of previous messages is far easier.I don't like Skype, but the fact remains it's easier to communicate on it than Discord.

Is this thread even ever read by some developer? Seems that it's not. Otherwise it's obviously crazy to not add this missing quoting feature and instead only let the users add a reation to someone else's post. Or at least tell anyone that this feature will come... ^^

Guys, it's not quoting, it's formatting of the text... Quoting is when you press one simple button and message where you clicked at attaches to your own message (no idea why I have to explain it to such a big company).
Please add QUOTING, not FORMATTING LIKE IT'S QUOTTED

I don't support being able to write it out manually, because you could fake a quote and make people think someone said something they didn't. However, message links exist now, and I think this would work very nicely with that. Even if it simply embedded the message under the link, that would be neat. But for the future, being able to simply right-click a message and quote it directly would be absolutely amazing.

Not exactly what I was hoping for, but it's a start. Need more integration, as in using the 3-dot menu on a post and have it do a quote properly instead of having to copy & paste & edit. One thing at a time I guess.

Надо создавать параллельные обращения, а то тут на комментарии как-то мало внимания обращают. Если система позиционируется как чат, то надо, чтоб маркдаун поддерживался в полном объёме, а уж цитирование в чатах, особенно в командных - это же первостепенно нужная вещь! На эту тему куча скриптов бесплатных, давно пора реализовать такое.
I think, we have to create parallel request, to take more attention of developers. If this system is a command chat, it has to support markdown fully, especially quoting! In team chats quoting is the first thing! There are many free scripts for it, please do it!

Почему вы не можете сделать нормальное цитирование (как например в мессенджере Телеграм)? Чтоб можно было цитировать с помощью контекстного меню, как часть цитаты (с выделением) так и полностью. Чтоб нельзя было изменить оригинальную цитату. Чтоб в цитате был показан ник и время сообщения, и чтоб можно было переходить на оригинальное сообщения кликом.
Уже прошло столько времени существования Дискорда, а самая нужная функция чата до сих пор не реализована!

Why you can not do normal quoting (such as in the messenger Telegram)? To be able to quote using the context menu, as part of the quotation (with selection) and fully. That it was impossible to change the original quote. So in the quote was shown the nickname and time of the message, and so that you can go to the original message by clicking.
So much time has passed for Discord, and the most needed chat function has not yet been implemented!

I'm posting this as a reminder that this wasn't implemented and that a look should be taken at this function. Unfortunately markdown is not quoting as many people before me already explained. Problems with markdown, no timestamps, no username, no reference link to message (possible other messages around), and mutability. Mutability is something that people who work with game developers should understand.
Personally I think it's the one key feature Discord is missing. After using discord for about a year, it is the one feature I constantly miss.
I'm an advocate of a reply to message function as it just avoids a lot confusion and hassle.
I've seen several requests of this already with. Some of those more than 200 upvotes. I'm starting to wonder if maybe it's just very hard to implement in Discord or if developers don't like it.

I don't think so guys, the thread has been sitting pretty for a while now, meanwhile my comment from a week ago (supporting the cause) has been sitting with "Pending approval", unable to be seen by anybody except myself.
