Increase the Max Number of Roles per Server

I'm in the process of creating a server for self improvement in whatever people decide. Once I open it, we will be starting with survival skills, art, exercise, and food (things me and my friend are personally interested in). Anyway, I am almost done making roles for every country and the 50 states and realized I will only have 15 role slots left once all is said and done and I could see making several more categories as the server grows. There really should be a way to get more roles. Also, as someone else mentioned before, being able to group roles into categories just as channels can be grouped into categories would be huge for managing roles. As would roles that provide no permissions. Granted, there is a nice "remove permissions" button now that allows you to enforce that with 1-2 clicks, but it would be nicer to also have a separate role thing that is exclusively "provides nothing but a tag".

Bumping because over 2 years later, and other updates implemented, but still waiting for this.

Bumping this because I use "react-roles" via a bot, so people can choose their own interests that they want to follow or participate in. More and more is being added as people request all new kind of interests. And I'm coming close to the limit now. So I would love to see them increase the max before I hit 250.

  • I agree that the limit should be raised.
but i believe that when you have so many roles you should also use something like this:

because else it would be a nightmare to manage and overview them most certainly.

I hope they update this to unlimited roles. It would be extremely useful in my case.

Bumping again because this is a need, doubling would be enough, at this point and how much of a demand our server is requesting this, I'd pay.

Discord are sitting on a potential gold mine here.

    1. An international politics server with a role for each nation and administrative roles. ( There's over 200 internationally recognized countries in the world at present. And if you add in disputed territories, you're over 250 just with that. This is useful information to have at a glance when discussing such a complex subject. )
(It's a valid point, though you're better off setting up a bot to handle channel visibility)

    2. A linguistics server with a role for each language and the user's proficiency in it. ( Even if you ignore the rare languages, there's still a lot of them. And at minimum you want a role for a native speaker, for a fluent speaker, and for a learning speaker. )
(Fitting every language under one roof means your server is big enough to require that. Discord can bend the rules for your server if you're big enough, just ask.)

    3. A server for API/bot testing - particularly testing the speed of mass role creation and mass role deletion.
(IDK what purpose mass role creation has, but xenon can set up roles for your bot to remove them if need be.)

    4. Bot and integration heavy servers in general
(Roles don't have to be stored on discord. If people don't need to see em' use some sort of off-site/app management for them.)

    5. Transient roles for mass games run over Discord that are created and deleted on the fly in a volume enough to warrant more than 250 roles.
(You can use plurlkit/tupperbox for most, and a custom built bot for the rest)

And here are a few less than reasonable reasons that people none the less would  be interested in:
    1. Anything in a s**tposting server
    (That's insanity.)

    2. Self-assigned roles for flair
    (plurlkit/tupperbox could help there)

    3. Roles with moderator privileges within a single channel for the purpose of allowing people to have their own channel and moderate it themselves.
(By using a bot to proxy perms and actions to specific members, you can have that without all the roles)

    4. The exact reasons you mentioned of demographic breakdowns.
(Custom bot can be used here, but tupperbox and plurlkit can help as well)

    5. Supermassive servers with 50+ channels and 10k users and 80 bots.
(A custom bot can deal with whatever requires 250 roles, though it should be specific to prevent server side strain and client side lag.)

    6. To have individual permissions for each user. (Yes I'm aware this is stupid, but it doesn't mean people won't do it.)
    (Check answers above)

    7. More = better. It's a flag to wave around to hype certain types of user.
(Sadly, the more roles you have, the less meaning those roles have. Plus Tupperbox, though a moderator's worst nightmare, allows people to have a completely custom profile in whatever channel one may be in. Allowing for a ton of identifiers, but sadly no roles. This one may not be solvable.)

In conclution. If your server's big enough, you can find someone to make a custom bot, or ask discord for an expansion. You can also:
A: use a multi-bot system to achieve a desired effect, or
B: Have people use a bot to make another profile, then puppet and manage that profile as if it's their own. This can be done with the aforementioned tupperbox and possibly pluralkit, along with a 3rd bot to manage what channels one can post to, though this will take ages to set up.)
