Overlay compatibility for macOS

Hamtaro some people don't want to upgrade to windows because they are fine with MacOSX

  • Senator

I second this. Mac gaming is annoying enough, so I find not having features that Windows users have is just infuriating.

  • Lalanthe

We need overlay support for mac OS! It's been 6 months since your blog post about the overlay updates/new features. I realize us mac users are not as overwhelmingly common as windows users, but come on - macs are popular enough that it shouldn't take this long to give us overlay too.

  • Khrixuz

Yeah, this feature would be really good to have!

  • texan78

Agreed! Please allow Discord overlays for mac OS!

  • Lalanthe

Ramennoodle, since Discord fully supports Mac and iOS I don’t think it is unreasonable to think 6months is too long to wait for, at minimum, a beta overlay for Mac users. My other complaint is that they don’t mention the Mac incompatiblity issue until the very end of the blog post. So, they got their users all hyped up over a new feature that we can’t even use. Also, the lack of communication (even letting us know it was being worked on would be nice) makes a frustrating situation worse. You are right that the two systems are different enough to make cross-platform difficult BUT Mac computers have been pretty mainstream for awhile now. We shouldn’t need to wait this long for a feature implementation. My original post was 6 months after the original blog....now it’s been another 3.

Also, I think adding extra features like the store or new things for mobile shouldn’t take precedence over giving an existing feature to Mac users.

This is two years old, but I feel like since by votes alone this is the second-highest requested overlay-related feature at the time of this comment it deserves a bump and a suggestion.
There are two ways Discord could implement this, which I'll go into detail on, and a couple more they could investigate.
    Three ways using MacOS APIs.
    1. A transparent always on top window.
Now in MacOS, it is possible to create always - on top windows with transparency, that can do a number of things, such as following a user to different "spaces" (the term for virtual desktops and full-screen applications). This would be relatively simple to achieve, as transparency in these windows is native, and native APIs allow this without it being somewhat hacked together.

    2. The hacked together way.
In MacOS Catalina, a new PiP API was introduced, you may be wondering, how does this help? Well, here's how. Discord, could simply use the PiP API to display a region of the screen overlayed with the call data - and use the screen recording permission to show the underlying application in the regions Discord's UI does not occupy.

    3. The not an overlay but the same features way
Rather than using either of the slightly hacky ways of doing this, discord could just use WidgetKit and create a simple but effective rich widget in notification center. This would allow users to swipe on their touchpad to see call data from within other applications without switching to discord.

One way the community could do something with this.
    1. Better touch tool.
BTT is a tool that allows users to script and create custom layouts that are persistent throughout the OS. Creating a script interface on discord would allow users to create a system-wide set of TouchBar icons to represent call data. This would allow the community to create a solution.

I see this issue goes back at least 3 years. Sure they managed to get the app on iOS, but apparently we can suck wind on our computers. Think it’s patently obvious there is no plan or intention to get the overlay working on Macs. We’re apparently not even worthy of a mention as to any intent or why there isn’t even a desire or, god forbid, a plan... The GAME runs fine on Macs, all the add-in’s work fine, why not the overlay? I know Mumble had one working a while ago, so it can’t be that hard. Very disappointing and certainly makes me want to discourage the use of discord wherever I can.

  • noftaly

I agree. I would love to also have the macOS overlay, and the discord team should, for the moment, focus on making features avalailble for everyone, instead of adding new features.

  • Lucifer Morningstar

Overlay for Mac OS, Yes please! Especially since eGPUs are now heavily supported with MAC OS, there should be absolutely no reason why Discord doesn't get on the ball and make this happen. Mac Gaming is becoming more of a thing than ever!

  • Assasingus14

please add the overlay, it's been almost a year since the original request

  • Mainman_99

So where are the old petitions/suggestions  for OSX Overlays?

I know I signed one about 2 years ago.

    Removed and hope we forgotten??

  • Parson

I would also like to add a voice to the mac overlay request.

  • Norathryth / jsjessika

Please add this for Mac.. I'd like to see who I'm talking to🙃

  • Kenai

Being brutally honest, Discord's shtick is Windows and Android. MacOS, iOS, and iPadOS has and will likely always be second class to the developers. Hence why we never got Discord games, the ability to even view what's in our library on iOS, etc.

Honestly, I fully expect this to get ignored like they ignored the issue with iOS a year ago when they removed speakerphone then added it back - except there's really nothing we can do because we can't rate a non-AppStore app.

I just wanted it to be visible that it's indeed possible for Discord to give us similar if not the same functionality, they're just choosing not to.

  • I would like to add my voice as well it is a crying shame that there is no overlay especially with the pandemic and the rise fo games that need an overlay to help make the experience better.

  • Jasper

"It has been a very long time since this has been addressed so the question is, is discord working on overlay for mac? and if so when are they expected to launch it?

  • Jupe

I have a dream, that one day OS X will get Discord overlay!

  • Woomitron

I, not Giorno Giovanna, have a dream... and that's support for Mac Overlay.

  • Bail

now that schools use discord for classes overlay would be even more appreciated... so we can play league instead of algebra

  • ktbunny

    +1 this post

The feature is really nice and Mac users would really appreciate it!

  • badbot

I think that this is really a petition enough. I would be happy to see Discord giving some more effort into upgrading mac users!

  • JayDub

As a macOS user I think this is a long overdue feature.  I can get a notification in the top left corner that people type a message into chat, but we can't get an overlay..?  The functions to display that notification is the same one you could use for a permanent overlay.

  • JeyPeytey

+1 Please add overlays for MacOS users !

  • Manaz

It's literally been 3 years since the original post.  Discord, get it together. This post is solid proof that there is a market of mac gamers. I agree, we are a minority. But a feature such as overlay should not at all be too hard to implement. I'm not sure why this doesn't exist in the first place, all I know is that it doesn't. Honestly though, I know it's hard but you literally created a reply feature. I'm sure this wouldn't take you long.

  • Phantom

Also, should we revive the petition and try to get enough signatures and show it to discord?

  • Riverside Orias

I'd be glad to sign any petition along these lines although I seriously doubt it would have any impact. What I find galling is they don't just give us this typical line "Your market share is way too low for us to devote any resources to having too much parity with our M$ version." Thank god they have an "experimental" mode because without that, none of my choices for input or output work correctly. PLUS, as having a very heavy impact in the MMO game market, many find ourselves kinda forced into it... plus a LOT of support for third party enhancements to that genre of gaming has been slowly shifted over to Discord.

  • the.mando

Has it been a year already and still no support with MacOS Overlay?

  • bjonnfesk

I suggest that instead of these Discord employees constantly merging different requests for getting an overlay on MacOS/Linux, their time might be better spent actually developing the overlay for MacOS and Linux, which would in fact remove the need to merge all these requests, since there would be no reason for requesting it anymore if such a thing existed.
