GIF Autoplay Toggle on Android
For accessibility reasons, I need GIFs to be static unless I choose to play them. Android does not have a toggle to turn off GIF autoplay. Even despite syncing my settings across clients (my PC settings have GIF autoplay switched off) GIFs still autoplay on mobile. I need the option to specifically TURN THEM OFF on Android!
Here's an image of my settings screen, where there is clearly no toggle for GIF autoplay:
And an image of my friend's settings screen on IOS, where there IS a toggle:

This sounds like good feedback, thought the Android devs want to prevent a button-mess, but I would like to see for this a toggle. +1

I find it amusing that there's a toggle for this on desktop but not mobile.
I understand this is pretty important for people with limited data plans.

I hope a discord dev can chime in on this issue. I recently switched to android from iOS. My gifs do not auto play at all. I want my gifs to auto play. Like the original post states, why is there no toggle for the Android app like the IOS app??
1 -
Still waiting for this support I guess. IOS and PC have this but not Android.
2 -
I can't stress enough how much this is needed.
5 -
This is a bump. I need to control my gif playings on my phone.

Where are the devs? This should be an option for Android mobile. It is more sensible than desktop. Hello? Anyone out there?
2 -
Please make this an option I can turn off.

Hi,
I have autism and the rapid, involuntary movements of gifs autoplaying on the Discord servers I am a member of make it difficult for me at times to participate in conversation or even look at the dialogue. I would be most grateful for a toggle allowing me to stop gifs from autoplaying on mobile.
Thank you in advance

Sadly, still no update. It would be so good to have autoplay on GIFs to be turned off or the choice at least to do so. It's really difficult on most days to follow a conversation and always having people spoilering the GIFs is not really the solution

As the person advice said, spoilering gifs are not a long term, useful solution. Several members of my server have migraines/headaches triggered by fast moving or repeatitive movement like gifs use. Having a toggle switch to turn off gifs on their individual devices is a long term, useful solution. Several people in this thread alone would benefit from a toggle, several members in my server would as well. Apple may have done it first, but I'm sure Android can do it better. 🤞

I need this feature so much. I'm in poor health and I have a lot of trouble with flashing/vibrating gifs. I haven't had a seizure in some time, but I do get severe migraines that are triggered by flashing/vibrating gifs and videos. It's made it hard to use servers that don't require flashing gifs to be spoilered.
Please add this toggle to Android. Desktop and iOS already have it. It's long overdue on Android.

Bump. This is a legitimate accessibility issue, as pointed out by multiple autistic and/or epileptic users. Please add a toggle or make the toggle for stickers also affect GIFs.
1 -
Like Roderik I'm autistic. I can't use important servers on android due to repeating gifs. There are many accessibility issues from this not being an option.

while it is reassuring to hear from fellow autistics that this is an issue for them as well, it is NOT reassuring that it still hasn't been addressed over two years on from my initial complaint. what the hell, discord?

Thanks technoxenoholic
It's ridiculous that Discord has no interest in neither disability awareness nor accommodations.1 -
Guess they're waiting on a lawsuit

please, this is such a huge concern for myself and others I know. A friend gets gif induced migraines that can trigger seizures. I get headaches and it can worsen my autism. This is such a huge accessibility issue, please please do something. It's so disappointing that devs are ignoring this accessibility issue. We're not just whining, it's a health issue for many of us. At least give us some response, please.

Please give people the option to turn gif autoplay off as it will make it so much easier for people with all kinds of troubles with autoplay. Some people get migraines/headaches, some people with autism may have sensory issues and so on. I also imagine it drains data too.
1 -
Accessibility for all users should have priority. @staff Please look into the issue as soon as possible.
2 -
I don't have the rates of epilepsy or autism, but the Migraine Research Foundation says 12% of the population suffers migraines. And in 2020 Discord had 100 Million monthly active users. What portion of them use (or wish they could use) Discord on Android? And why is Discord continuing to fail them? Please fix this as soon as possible.

Yea, it's pretty disgusting they don't have filters to search for these kinds of active requests. Get your stuff together Discord. This is a real issue that I believe has been addressed on iOS for a year now.

I'm used to autistics not being a priority but if we knew it was a roadmap item that'd be something

The most upsetting thing for me is that this DOES exist for stickers, and it DOES exist on iOS. Why not add the extra toggle for GIFs on Android? This request has been active for over two years and it makes one of the servers I frequent almost unusable on my phone.

hi, op here! perhaps at this point we should be boosting this around the internet a little so we get a little more attention on the issue? @ the discord team on twitter, perhaps? or whatever social media site(s) they're active on, if any...

bump this needs to be a thing, how has it not been implemented still after 2+ years
0 -
This finally exists for me in version 74.9!
0 -
It's in accessability, not "text and images" like on iOs in case anyone hasn't found it yet.

Unfortunately, while the toggle still exists under Accessibility along with the other reduced motion settings, GIFs still autoplay when they should not. I'm now on build version 93.9 stable. I don't understand why this is so difficult to fix.
