What To Do Next with Nitro Paid Users
I because a Nitro subscriber because I wanted to enhance my chat server. I had hoped that by picking the max tier, I would be able to get a vanity URL for my chat server. The way the Nitro ad copy reads, it seems you get that automatically just by joining. I was never interested in the games but only in tiering up my membership to Discord. Most free services also offer a paid tier for power users.
I realize the Boost concept was designed as a form of fan-engagement but, in my opinion, Boosts should be a totally separate concept from Nitro (or a paid account in general). But while on the tangent of boosts, I also think that every month users who boost another server continue boosting, it should add up or accumulate points that equal in-server status. It seems insane to me that there is no recognition between someone who just joined and someone who has boosted a server for months or years.
But getting back to what Nitro SHOULD be. I should be able to tier up or NITRO my own channel for a monthly fee with one free entry-level tier (as existing) and two paid tiers NOT as a boost but as a direct paid user. The cost to boost one's own channel is astronomical and frankly insane. And it is one of the things I do not like at all about Discord as-is. If you made it a reasonable cost to become a paid member of Discord to get those existing perks you'd make MILLIONS but by putting it behind this very cost prohibitive boost structure, you're actually holding people back from paying you to simply elevate their membership and become a more fully fledged Discord user. This is where you are truly missing out.
Right now my one boost on my own channel feels like a waste of money and I've frankly been considering cancelling but since you've had no other way of even distinguishing a paid user and I know that if everyone gets everything for nothing you'll go out of business, I've let my Nitro status go on even though I never played any of the Nitro games and I'm not presently enjoying any of the channel perks that I was hoping to get when I first opted to become a paid user. That to me is stupid.
I am not advising you get rid of Boosting. But Boosting, in my opinion, is fan engagement (like Patreon, Kickstarter, or the new YouTube Join function). That is about fans supporting their favorite channels/servers/content creators.
But if the games are going away and you're looking to how to keep the dollars coming in for a subscription of some kind, here's your answer. Let those dollars continue to flow in but as a paid user where I directly get to level up my user account and get access to the perk levels purely as a paid user. And let me get those full benefits directly for my paid account, not having to get others to back me just so I can get the range of features I'm missing. I want to pay you a fee and get themes, chat perks, etc. and I will pay the higher tier to get a proper vanity URL. MANY users who are free users now will want to pay you to raise their status to a paid user from a free user and by opening this up you will make MORE money and provide a better service.
Sorry this was long. Thanks for listening. I REALLY hope you seriously consider this.
