Improvements to Notifications Settings
This is a combination modification ideas to help address the problem of Servers causing unsuspecting users of excessive notifications spam. In general there is three main interface updates/additions that can help with this problem.
Client User interface Changes
These changes are meant to help the end user in identifying channels with excessive notifications while also providing ways to get the notifications the user really wants.
- Update the per-server Notification settings to clearly Identify what the default settings are, and what the current setting is.
- Update the per-server Notification settings to include a button to reset the Notifications to default.
- Update the Per-server Icons with an icon to signify which channels are excessively noisy with notifications. A good example would be to clearly identify servers/channels that generate 30 notifications an hour, 60 in a day, and 120+ a week. This are generally quite noisy all things considered.
- Update the per-channel notification options to override the server wide option to "Suppress @everyone and @here", "Suppress All Role @mentions", and "Mobile Push Notifications". In larger servers this is required because the default notification settings may lead to four channels completely drowning out the rest by default.
Per-Server Administration adjustments...
- Add per Channel Notification Indicators to server Administrators/Operators of channels that are currently configured in a fashion to allow excessive messages. An example would be a channel that is configured to send notifications on every message, and the channel has more than 50 active users that can message on said channel.
- Add a warning dialog to server owners/admins when their server's default settings lead to notification spam.
- Add a Sign-in warning notification for server admins/operators when one of their channels is generating excessive notifications. Some tuning for when this notification appears will need some tweaking, but the general idea is that a channel should not consistently generate more than 720 notifications a month. An example of a channel that will cause this warning is one where the channel has generated more than one thousand notifications over the past thirty days.
- Add an automated wizard to help channel operators/owners with fixing channel notification spam. The general idea of this wizard is to identify potential channels and role setups that can lead to excessive notification messages.
