username change is bad as expected
my friend toaster had to change their name to something else because their name was taken. now it is toasty something idk, and they were upset. I don't want everyone to be forced to change their identity because some idiots couldn't figure out 4 numbers.
Why do we need to understand discriminators? We don't need to know how it works. It's not an issue if people are like "discriminators? what's that?" Nobody hardly ever uses the discriminators so they don't need to know. Nobody gets stuck or has difficulty as a result of it. This did not improve the platform and save people some trouble. This just made all my friends change their names, and they aren't happy getting kicked out of their old names. They don't feel like their new name is them. This sucks. You made existing users unhappy, and didn't affect new users.
New users aren't going to be happier that this changed. They aren't going to be like "oh you used to have numbers after your name? Boy, that must have been awful, I'm glad they got rid of it." They won't care. This didn't help them. This didn't make more people join the platform. They aren't going to be like "oh they got rid of the numbers after your name? All right, now I think I'll join discord." Because it's not like it makes it more appealing.
In fact, this is less appealing, because now people are going to be like, "all right, i'm making an account now. i want to use my username toasterbread. oh, it's taken, that sucks. i guess i should have joined when the usernames were just starting. now all the good names are taken and i'm going to be cringe. I don't want that."
There's a chance they will maybe keep trying different names, but if it takes a while for them to find a username, then the account-creation process takes longer, so they are more likely to get interrupted and then there's a chance they don't try again.
This decreases the new joiners, and bothers the current users.
For whatever reason, discriminators removed the taboo of putting numbers after your name, allowing people to share names. It seems lame if someone is named like rex49543, but for some reason it seems better if someone is named rex#4954. As long as everyone is forced to have the numbers, it's not embarassing to have them, so people now can comfortably share names. It solved the problem of "my username is taken. that sucks. i don't want to go by a different name." Why are you bringing this problem back?
I don't care about display name. You can add that if you want since it doesn't bother anybody, but now people in a server will have 3 different names, so it's kind of strange. And it's even fine to remove special characters from usernames, forcing those people to change names. It may bother those people, but it's fair because it has been hard to ping those people and many had to deal with that issue sometimes. Just don't remove discriminators. Discriminators were a solution to problems and I don't want to have to deal with this now, plus having to change my name sucks.

like everyone i know is struggling to find a close version of their original name that is not like annoyingly filled with numbers or random letters or misspellings or something. they can't just be their own name.
The change literally does the opposite of its stated goal

People whose names are combinations of words will probably have their names taken by like automatic dictionary-coverers. That will include like a lot of people.

This change was terrible for a number of reasons. And the discriminators actually made remembering your username *easier*. Now you have to remember what ever else random clutter you have to add to your usual username because someone snagged yours before you could get it. The ONLY thing that should have been removed is the case sensitivity for usernames so people like aiz#0001 wouldn't be receiving friend requests for Aiz#0001 or vice versa.

The minute problems of the discriminators not being entirely clear at a glance could so easily have been solved by plain having the account name in one field, and the discriminator number in a separate one, with a little tooltip you hover over or tap on and it tells you what it means.
The problem of running out of discriminators for certain names is as simple as just increasing the numeral range, name#000000 is future proof enough, or maybe just add two uppercase letters at the end, that's a lot more characters than numbers.5 -
I wholehearditly agree with this i have been holding the name chriz#0001 for over 4 years now and now I lose this name due to this change even though i supported discord development with nitro for that time period. I just feel like this is a kick in the balls for everyone who supported discord and now lost their favourite name!
