The New Bad Name System | Name Reservations | Inconsiderate towards Users
I don't like getting into complaints because it mostly comes down to being a waste of time, due to ignorance from the companies the rants are about.
But hey here is my attempt on top of the thousands of others.
New Name System
At this point I'm not fully sure what the true reasons are for this change. Early on we heard due to technical reasons, and as a programmer - fair enough. But that seems like something that can be worked around rather than replacing. Then the post came out to speak about the "actual" reasons. And this seems to all not be true too.
From what is now going around, it's all corporate to do with trying to appeal to new users, due to the obvious plateau of "gamers" and other communities that are already on Discord. This. Is. Silly.
Names are important to people, and I think we can all agree on that. You grow up with your names or aliases to represent who you are.
And now that the chance to have that name has been taken - you are doing more damage than you realize.
The reason doesn't really matter, but what does matter is the trust and understanding Discord should have towards its community - aka us. Discord stood out for many reasons before, and really was a light when so many other alternatives were awful. What happened?
Name Reservations
Now, I personally would be far less upset if reservations were not a thing.
You told us all that it was based on date of account creation... but did not tell us about that HUGE pinch of salt that comes with it - reserving names.
I go by Wooshii online. That is my alias and I also hold it close to me for a number of reasons that have grown over time. This is the same for other people too. Names grow with you and are even what some people prefer to be seen as. They hold weight.
However, when trying to assign my name as Wooshii, I could not as it was not available. This is annoying, but you know what - fine, someone got it before me. Very unique name to take though so I was confused.
And then I found out about names being reserved:
No one has wooshii/Wooshii. Yet I can't have it.
Because its being reserved for someone else?
What the heck are you doing? You enforce a change, tell us how its going to work, and then lie anyway?
You're locking names that are specific to people that are close to discord even if they haven't set that name yet? Absolutely ignorant.
Inconsiderate
People have met each other on this platform by what they are called online. They are recognized by this change. A display name may seem to fix this problem, but it really does not. It's like sprinkling sugar on the problem.
Unfortunately, no matter what corporate wording discord attempts to use in front of us, you are clearly not a company to be trusted. You SHOULD be a company we can trust, but we cannot. That's all it is.
Even when you're doing something for the best of Discord that may be controversial, even THAT is full of poor management and nepotism. As soon as favoritism or nepotism comes into play, I am not sticking around for it.
I've been paying for Nitro since it first ever came out. And I'm probably going to scrap it now, like many many others. I get that's not much on my own, but the fact that others are doing it - maybe listen to us. And do not say you are when you are not.

Yeah, that they still did their thing despite every single user being against that change shows how little respect they have for their users. I hope they don't keep going down this road of bad decisions. I'm going to "keep" my numbers I had, even if that means I will have a stupid username. Definitely reconsidering ever supporting discord financially.

I appreciate you, and your post. That's all I have to say.
