This seems to only occur on mobile for me (s9+), but whenever I send an image that's originally a png, discord converts it into a jpg and the quality falters a bit (not a ton, but it's still pretty noticeable), even when I'm connected to stable wifi.
I noticed, however, that if I'm desktop and then open that image from mobile in a browser, then copy and paste it back into discord, it reverts back into a png with near lossless quality, so its not like discord can't handle these images. I'm thinking it has to do with how discord is processing my thumbnails on mobile, because even on desktop, the images from my phone are noticeably less legible than the images as a result of the aforementioned "copy and paste from browser on desktop" method.
For me, not having people download the image or view in browser to see the full resolution of my image, even though discord can clearly handle the image resolution as shown on desktop is essential. Perhaps a setting that toggles image compression when sending messages (such as high compression if user is on data, and a "best quality" option for users connected to WiFi).
