Linux - Screen Share Sound Support
With Screen Sharing sound already supported on Windows, I would like Screen Sharing to be supported for Discord on Linux as well.
Gaming on Linux exists and does relatively well despite what many naysayers think or wish to believe and having this support for users such as myself would make this less frustrating.
(Not to mention that we're not even mentioned in the supported platforms art along with the other logos at the bottom of the site's webpages...)

Or just fork Discord's code base and update as you see fit and when necessary and add fixes you want.

Alkaris since when is Discord's code publicly accessible? If it was, this thread would've never existed and we didn't have to shout at them for like 2 years now

Damax Not exclusively, but it would help with some other things for sure.
It has been done, running Discord on linux with a newer electron version. On Arch Linux, there's discord-arch-electron on the AUR that achieves this with many different newer Electron versions.
It would definitely help with Wayland support and therefore improve screensharing and performance of the app itself.
Unfortunately, again to my understanding, Discord doesn't just use Electron's screensharing feature, but instead built their own proprietary tech on top. I would assume that 1. fixing this and 2. making sure it works on every popular distro, WM and compositor, together with the comparatively small linux userbase complaining about it, is what causes this long holdup.
I definitely blame Discord for not fixing this in so long or at least make a statement or an effort.. but it's also understandable that it's not "a 20 minute fix"3 -
I'd love to open a PR with a fix or start a GoFundMe to support the development costs of this.

At this point, there is no need to PR or fund Discord for this (a lot of people do it buying Nitro for muh emotes). There is already a community custom client that does this https://github.com/maltejur/discord-screenaudio. Also, Webcord is working on it. So, when people here says '20 minutes fix', it's literally that. The community already thinkered to get it working. Props to the people get it working. I guess the Discord-screenaudio is just a browser wrap, so maybe its safe to use. Webcord tries to comply with discord ToS but doesn't have this feature yet.
An indie company that gets no funding whatsoeeeever.

Completely outrageous that this is still not a feature. Discord is losing money on this, despite it not even being an impossible fix.

Still no support which is pretty sad

Now that Pipewire is beginning to be shipped with major Linux Distro's which replaces the ageing and hacky pulseaudio system and now that we're starting to see some community made work-arounds to get this working (albeit in a hacky and obtuse way) could we get a second look at this request any time soon? It's a standard and fairly important feature that even competitors like Microsoft Teams or Zoom have that Discord just completely lacks.
It's 100% possible with pipewire, just needs to be implemented officially if at all possible.2 -
PLEASE. The Linux client *used* to support this. Just add it back! I'm sick of inventing my own workarounds that don't even work anymore because their microphone input system that wasn't designed for stream audio is no longer capable of even providing good sound quality when I stream something anymore. The only other workaround requires PipeWire, which would be a HUGE undertaking to switch to because of my automated and extremely complex pro- *and* desktop-audio setup. Just to use a workaround that was too lazy to add some extra lines of code for PulseAudio, just because Discord is too lazy to support it themselves.

Its absolutely atrocious that discord still fails to support or even acknowledge this. The absolute least discord could do is give a response.

Discord's decision-makers do not appear to be aware of how much more they are saying by saying nothing...

Your best bet is to make enough noise on social medias about this not being addressed, how Discord being feature lacking. Discord on Linux is used by more than just gamers, you also have code developers and more. Steam Survey only shows a small portion of Linux users.

As you say, I am also a game developer and a nitro subscriber. I use discord for work every day. It's very frustrating that discord refuses to stream some things properly and cannot ever provide audio for these streams when every other streaming service can.

This is a must and I don't see why they havent fixed it yet. +1

With the release of the Steam Deck, lack of screen share audio support in Linux feels even more bad.

You can use discord-screenaudio as that works pretty well but isn't as good as the official client or web cord. This is such an easy fix for discord as if some random guy can botch it into a client then discord with their teams of software engineers could figure it out.
Incredibly embarrassing. Canceled my nitro.

cancrled mine aswell

They recently updated the canary version to a newer electron version and one the devs replied to a comment about screen sharing and audio on Linux. Hopefully it happens soon cause I love Linux so much https://imgur.com/a/PK41b1C

"find the time"? I hope they find it soon because I mainly boot into Windows for this nowadays... I've tried all "fixes" mentioned here with poor success. Audio is mono and choppy, none is good as it should be.
I'd also pay for Nitro if I knew they were working to fix this instead of implementing bling bling into user profiles and adding activities that might also not work on linux too =(

Another day where discord continues to add features for their fancy nitro instead of fixing actual problems. Sure updating your electron version is nice but no fixes for Linux??? When are you going to wake up and see that Linux community is big enough that you should atleast add audio for screen sharing so we can stop annoying you and the devs.

I stream games and such to friends all the time, would be nice to be able to stream the audio natively. It should be noted too that the Steam Deck runs on Linux and so there's even a platform that would benefit and give more eyes to Discord.

Might have to go back to skype
