Feedback on the new sticker feature/Regarding stickers
FYI + TL;DR
FYI
- After talking to the Discord team, they have stated that ripping stickers and converting them into .gif's is a violation of their own copyright. Just stating this if anyone is wondering.
- Prices in the main post are in CAD.
- When I say "non-Nitro" in the main post, this includes both free users and Nitro Classic users.
TL;DR
Stickers feel like a cash-grab.
What I'm suggesting is
- A free pack of 5-10 stickers for all users, changing every 1-2 months.
- non-Nitro users pay a dollar for a set of 30
- Nitro Classic users get stickers for free for as long as they subscribe (with the exception of "What's Up Wumpus", Nitro Classic and Nitro users should get it for free, permanently)
- Nitro users get to keep the stickers they've claimed even after they stopped paying for it
- Nitro users get more exclusive stickers as opposed to just one sticker set
- Partnering with games to make sticker packs. This may be for upcoming games, games users have played before, or popular games.
- The ability to make your own stickers
Main Post:
The Discord team told me to submit feedback here as opposed to a support ticket, so here's what I think.
Four dollars for a sticker pack for non-Nitro users just seems absurd. Adding another dollar can get you one month of Nitro Classic in comparison.
And say you decide to buy Nitro as a way to save some money on every sticker pack while also getting some other perks. Well, on top of paying 10 dollars a month for Nitro, you also pay an extra 3 dollars per sticker pack. That's only saving 1 dollar off of the non-Nitro price. Actually, I don't think you're saving at all.
This drives away people from stickers due to the high price. You would expect it to be at most a dollar for a non-Nitro user, not four. Once this gets introduced worldwide, people will call this feature a cash-grab, as stickers on other apps are usually free.
So what I'm suggesting is
- A free pack of 5-10 stickers for all users, changing every 1-2 months.
- Free users pay a dollar for a set of 30
- Nitro Classic users get stickers for free for as long as they subscribe (with the exception of "What's Up Wumpus", in which Nitro Classic and Nitro users should get it for free, permanently)
- Nitro users get to keep the stickers they've claimed permanently
- Nitro users get more exclusive stickers as opposed to just one sticker set
- Partnering with games to make sticker packs. This may be for upcoming games, games users have played before, or popular games.
- The ability to make your own stickers
I just hope changes are made so that people will actually use the feature, rather than it being scrapped like the Discord game store.

"Stickers feel like a cash-grab."
Yes. -- and that might be OKAY, if they also felt more user-centered.
Discord is giving us the ability to start a collection, but we can't even get rid of + re-add packs? I added the (currently) free packs to test the feature, and now I'm stuck with them forever?
It makes sense to have emoji list my "frequently used", but stickers are larger and more resource-intensive to load. I'd prefer a "favorites" list that I can edit.
I do feel that once you've paid you should be able redeem a sticker set again, even if it isn't currently in the store, and even if you had a change of accounts.
(But more importantly: that I should be able to uninstall + reinstall packs in general)0 -
Jumping in to add my own feedback on the feature:
They're *fine*, but I don't like how we can't manage them. I redeemed the free packs, but I'm never going to actually use them, and I'm now stuck with them.
It wouldn't be so bad if the app didn't parse the first word of I type to auto-suggest a sticker I own. It feels invasive, not helpful, and it's a constant nag to use the stickers I don't actually want.
I'd like to be able to ignore the feature, but since I've interacted with it, I can't. Don't like that.
The text entry bar on desktop is starting to get bloated with icons. Being able to customize the buttons there would be great: I'd be able to hide the unused Sticker icon, as well as the other unused shortcuts. That would be nice.

"The text entry bar on desktop is starting to get bloated with icons."
I feel the same.
Gifts icon? When am I going to use that? Not mid-conversation in my average day.
GIFs? Sometimes, but not every few messages. Same with stickers. And we already had a tab up at the top of the gifs/emoji menu to swap between those two--why not have it default to last-used? (Which in my case would mean emojis 90% of the time & the other kinds of things rarely.)
"auto-suggest (...) feels invasive, not helpful"
Likewise, I'm getting twitchy about the distraction that is caused by the sticker icon flickering while I type.
