Letting people know you're there

In text channels, the only way to know if someone is listening to you is if they are responding, which can make things very awkward. What if there was a button one could press to add an icon which is their pfp near where "someone is typing" is. This could really help in serious/vent channels so people can let others know that they're listening without needing to say "yeah", "of course" and other nothing phrases.
