Custom Status (Server Feature)
Allow server admins or owner to enable/disable the custom status feature to be shown in their server only..
Reasons to add this..
1. It gives the server moderation teams more control over what is being shown to their members. Currently a lot of servers are having issues with people putting racial slurs, advertisement, swearing etc.
2. It doesn't make the server moderation teams have to search through their member list to spot or find the 'bad' ones.. which is impossible for large servers.
Note: You can disable the usage of people using external emojis in their playing status per channel.. but not normal emojis that are considered "inappropriate"

"...with the exception of scrolling through your member count, which I already mentioned is something hardly anyone would do in a server with any decent number of members."
You really don't get it. It doesn't matter how small or large a server is. I moderate both, and it's an issue in both. I scroll through the member list a ton on servers I don't even moderate. Just because you don't scroll through doesn't mean other people don't.
"Maybe if you asked for something more reasonable, like a status search option so you can actually find people who have bad words or links in their status"
How is a "status search option" more reasonable than a simple permission on/off switch??
"...all of these other actions require you to dig further into their account to see their rule breaking status."
A simple click. A child can do that. It should be blockable per-server, so a child doesn't accidentally see NSFW content.
"There's far better ways that could be implemented to control status's in child friendly servers, and honestly it's kind of ridiculous seeing everyone here trying to advocate for an option that's the equivalent of scorched earth tactics."
I never said Discord should nuke the custom statuses, just allow servers or individuals to control whether or not they allow it to be displayed.
I really don't understand how you think adding a permission to roles is a "scorched earth" method. It seems like the easiest and most admin-friendly way to control custom statuses on servers. It isn't intrusive at all, and could even be applied per-user, if that's what the server wants.

The reason I called it scorched earth tactics is because the parent post doesn't make any clarification in of itself of specifying that this should be something applied to roles, and itself words it as just a generic command to be applied server wide, not rolewise.

That's why I put forth the idea of having some search function which allows you to search through all the statuses, which I know could be easily coded as a function into one of the many bots that servers use for moderating already (example mute user status upon detecting nsfw words in their status).
I am perfectly happy with something that just individually applies to users in a server. I am also completely ok with individual users having some option to block statuses of other users as well, or turning it off completely for the individual person as well.
I just don't want discord to give some generic off/on function that applies to everyone except for users with insert perm levels here because all I see is servers just turning it off for the majority except some few high/well liked individuals that the admins are happy with giving some special roles that basically let them "flex" their server clout so to speak (just like how some servers have done with external emotes). I'm also just completely ignoring the aspect that a generic serverwide status off/on option is more than likely going to just be turned on for the majority of servers, which besides the fact it's going to absolutely negate Discord's intended prevalence of the statuses, is also going to just be the "easy option" that mods will use to make their jobs a lot easier at the expense of users who use their status appropiately.
My whole position can be summed up with if you are asking for some feature which would allow coders to sort through statuses which in turn, can be used to automatically detect and hide inappropiate statuses on an individual basis, I'm on board.
But if all you're asking is just some generic serverwide status block that's more likely than not just going to turn statuses into another "special privilege" for the higher ranked users, than I disagree.

If there was a server-wide on/off switch individuals couldn't have special permissions to display their status. The original post was asking for that. I don't see why you have an issue with such an idea.
If a server is child-friendly, they would want a blanket "off" switch for statuses. They wouldn't want to take a risk. If the server allows NSFW content, there's no reason for them to turn it off. The setting would balance out very well.
Anyway, that was about a blanket on/off switch. Now onto a Role Permission:
I get where you're coming from when you talk about privileged users, but I really don't see any harm if servers allow certain users to have a custom status, but not others. Honestly, if that's what it takes for Discord to allow the hiding of other's statuses, I'm all for it!
A role permission could block new "randoms" (and trolls/bot users) from displaying inappropriate statuses, while becoming "confirmed", or a "member" would grant access to them. I see a lot of servers that only allow 1 channel until the user "agrees" to the rules and maybe does something else before they have full access to the server. Custom statuses would fit perfectly as a new permission.
If you have problems with servers that show respect to the well-liked people, you're free to leave. They already do it with colors and roles that display differently. I don't see a permission for statuses as being anything worse. If anything, it just gives more freedom to servers, which is good for moderators and the overall health of servers.

"if you are asking for some feature which would allow coders to sort through statuses which in turn, can be used to automatically detect and hide inappropiate statuses on an individual basis, I'm on board."
That would be called a role permission. It's the only way to "block" specific users' statuses.
"But if all you're asking is just some generic serverwide status block that's more likely than not just going to turn statuses into another "special privilege" for the higher ranked users, than I disagree."
You keep contradicting yourself. If it's server-wide, higher ranked users couldn't use custom statuses. If it's not truly server-wide, it's called a role permission, and now you fall back to the issue of high-level users "flexing," as if that even matters. It's the only way a bot could search the statuses and mute based on certain criteria.

honestly I would settle for being able to personally block seeing these messages, but I also really believe server owners should have the choice to at the very lease mute these messages in offending members so they dont have to ban them

My bad I misspoke there. I meant to say that I would want a role specific permission for statuses just like most other things that would be easily automated via bots. I however, want it to be applied very similarly to how you said here.
"A role permission could block new "randoms" (and trolls/bot users) from displaying inappropriate statuses, while becoming "confirmed", or a "member" would grant access to them."I'm most happy with a fair system like this that lets everyone use statuses as long as it's server appropriate, and I see it as a exponentially better method as compared to a generic server wide block option. I'm just concerned about how many servers will actually apply it this reasonably and not just turn it off by default for the average user.

The ironic thing is that custom statuses are part of Nitro perks (read: included, not exclusively). So Discord have to be careful how they approach this despite the feedback because their revenue is what is keeping this afloat.
I'm in total agreement (as you can see in the earlier pages), however realistically I don't actually see this happening very soon. Which is a shame.

Just give the user control over what they see and don't see. Take it down to the individual level. If someone has an offensive status, give the user the control to hide that person's status. Or to shut everyone's statuses off. Or if an individual wishes to block a user, *truly* block that user then and don't just put their posts as a 'spoiler'. Allow blocking to remove them from your sight, custom status and all. When you put someone on ignore in a game, you simply don't see their posts anymore.
I'm a proponent of individual controls, rather than having to wait for someone else to protect me.

Only being able to use custom emotes in custom statuses is part of Nitro; not the ability to use a custom status. It's no different than servers being able to allow/disallow custom emotes, which is also part of Nitro.

Yes, individual control would be very nice, but it should be added alongside server control.
If a server chooses to be child-friendly, they should be able to turn off custom statuses, whether server-wide or role-based, to remove the risk of inappropriate text being publicly displayed.
I can't stand banning people who added a custom role that fits in with their server, but breaks the rules of mine. I would try warning them, but if they don't respond soon enough, server owners/moderators have no choice but to ban a user for simply trying to fit in with their friends on a completely unrelated server. It's horrible, and something needs to be added for moderators.

Still no update on this? I'm trying to use discord for school-based clubs and event organization, and this one "feature" or limitation is stopping me from going forward with it fully and publicly.
The fact that the server owner has no control over what users set means it isn't usable for SFW or child-inclusivity due to the ability of a user to post NSFW or racially insensitive content. The fact that I'd need to be viewing every user on the server incase anyone posts a status with this isn't a solution sadly :/
Hopes to their adding role-control or some kind of control on the server side to make this program usable to people who aren't just (often-gaming) adults to make it more social media applicable for public school and school system uses. The kids already use discord and love to join in... it's just sad that this is the reason why it cannot go forward safely.

I see that nothing has been done so far and the issue is urgent.
