Notifications are not 100% suppressable. At least, they aren't 100% suppressable for a particular chat channel on a server. One can mute the channel, so that mundane traffic doesn't push alerts or result in the red badge of unread generic content. One can configure Notification Settings to the "Nothing" option for the channel in question, so that pings do not make noise or generate pop-up messages in the corner of the screen.
However, if such channel is both muted and notification settings set to "nothing", pings in that channel nonetheless result in the red badge of (1) unread message. It's silent. It doesn't intrude on the screen. But it nonetheless nags you with that (1) badge until you go look at it or affirmatively mark it as read via the right-click menu.
We should be able to isolate particular chat channels and configure notification settings so those channels *never* notify us of *anything* whatsoever, in *any fashion*. Total and complete suppression of one or a few channels such that we may freely pretend they do not exist even if somebody in such a channel issues a ping to us.
