Can't upload transparent gif as an Avatar but can upload them to chat

Title. I used to have a gif with a transparent background as my avatar for ages, even swapping them out occasionally, and since the new profile customization update- they all force a white background which looks awful. Yet, I can upload the same gif into a chat and it has it's transparency! What's going on and can I do anything to fix it, or will an update have to remedy this?
