Allow Spaces, Capital Letters And Custom Emojis Within Channel Names. In General More Expression With Server Format!
Discord servers currently face a limitation in their layout customization and consistency due to the inability to use custom emojis and spaces within channel names. We firmly assert that this restriction hinders the potential for a cohesive and personalized server experience.
There is simply no justifiable reason to enforce such constraints on users' creativity.
- If for whatever unknown potential benefit the currently naming format has for a server, people can simply have the freedom to continue using their old format, it may even be explained via a tooltip below the text box when editing channel names that discord recommends having a dash key between words. It's worth noting that Discord already allows such flexibility for Voice Chat channels and forums, making the current restrictions seem even more arbitrary.
- It should be highlighted for anyone unaware reading this, this feature actually briefly existed in the form of a “bug” in the Channel Edit API 07/06/2022 - which allowed users to change the names of text channels like they were a thread/voice channel. It got fixed (downgraded) after approximately 12 hours. Although it was promptly fixed, it emphasizes the simplicity of implementation.
- In actual practice currently, discord users already attempt to bypass these limitations by resorting to Unicode and emojis from external sources, rendering the current system ineffective. This is especially prevalent in the gaming industry, where server customization is crucial.
- For anyone that bring up searching channels. A simple error could requiring you to have text in the channel name. If someone lacks common sense in making an appropriate channel name for their server then that is on them. People who are struggling to make a channel name with emojis and spaces shouldn't stop them from still using the current system. An indicator for the amount characters left can be placed on the right of the text box.
I firmly assert that enabling custom emojis and spaces within channel names is a win-win solution for everyone involved. I struggle to envision see any valid reasons for an opposition to this proposal, unless it stems from a desire to object for the sake of objection.
