Desktop chat layout shouldn't match Mobile's; Revert please
I'm unsure if the similarities were caught elsewhere, but I haven't noticed anyone else state how the new update (that nobody is liking) is an update that mostly brings the chat layout in unity with the mobile app's chat layout.
The layout on mobile works because it capitalizes on the real estate of an otherwise smaller screen that requires a larger font to remain legible. The mobile app needs all the extra room to fit in chat by removing the dividing text lines between posters, and keeping the edge margins to a minimum.
The desktop app does not face this same problem, and shouldn't be treated as such. Because desktop has all of that extra screen space that the user can decide by resizing the window, the focus was rightly on making the text comfy and easy to read which was perfect before the update.
This new layout acts as if it assumes people only keep the Discord window very, very small and need a as much room as possible to fit chat text, as if it is a mobile app. I don't want to beat a dead horse, but obviously nobody really agrees with this. The chat layout was just fine the way it was: easy and comfy to read. Now it is like compact IIRC but with profile pictures.
Please revert back the chat layout to what it was previously, so that it's easy to read again. I don't mind the new popup for emotes on mouse-over, really, but also agree that it shouldn't be covering messages. It might be worth putting this update back to the drawing board for the time being. Or at the very least, bring back the divider line between posters, and restore the border margins to their previous state.
Thanks for reading!
