Activity Status is nothing but irritating

The return of the Activity status icons is as annoying and unnecessary as it was the first time. 

I genuinely have no idea what possible purpose these serve, other than to clutter the UI even further. At the very least, there has to be a way to set it to default to off for yourself, rather than needing to change it back to blank every single irritating time.
