Captcha Support as optional requirement for server On-Boarding process
So security and safety stuff obviously also requires community upvotes. Kinda wrong approach if you're asking me, but be it as it is.
So here is the idea:
Add the solving of a captcha as an optional requirement for OnBoarding (not just during raid alert). This captcha dialog should also have the option to show a custom message the server admin can put there.
PRO:
- Would possibly catch most of the bot/spam/scam accounts entering the server. (yes it is a lot every week at times)
- Users do not need to go through a fishy/sketchy looking verification process, which might even link them outside of discord.
- Private servers or those not using the new OnBoarding system could possibly get rid of another bot, as bots can also be an attack surface. Just saying.
CON:
- None, as it would just be another optional option in the OnBoarding setup.
Why not use one of the million verfication bots out there?
Because those only work well (and they really work well, no question) for private servers, which are not using the new OnBoarding system. We ran plenty of tests with verification bots in combination with the new discord OnBoarding, and it simply does not work out. In the best scenario the users will jsut get bombarded with all available channels after successful verification, instead of those they customized during the onboarding. Which is a shame.
Frankly, would the default channels and channel custoomization features be implemented in a more proper way, this would not even be an issue. But I still would perfer the captcha verification being an inbuild feature, users can trust.
