Videos as profile pictures and banners as an alternative to GIFs
As the GIF format has not been updated in 36 years, it has become very outdated with modern standards and compression. This causes the GIFs to be often larger than 10mb while also being of horrible quality.
This is also why most web developers use a video (like .mp4) as a replacement for a GIF, and set it to autoplay, muted, playsinline, and loop. Making it feel like a high-quality GIF, with none of the tradeoffs. Both you and the user save bandwidth, and the user experiences amazing quality. Especially with modern encoding standards like AV1 packaged with .webm.
Since Discord is also an Electron app, modern standards would be supported on every platform as long as the Chromium version used has support for it.
Allowing us to use a video format alternative to a GIF file would be huge for both Discord and its users in bandwidth, and the users would enjoy high-quality PFPs and banners to represent themselves.
