.SVG Still and animated emotes
Emotes designed and/or animated with the .svg extension are vector based, therefore could take up all supported screen resolution in their emote 'embeds' and are tiny compared to .gif and .png files, therefore would allow for longer, better animations with greater resolution, that will potentially and most probably load faster than current available emotes due to reduced file sizes. Thanks to this, people with appropriate tools could make much more of Discord's custom emotes capabilities. Is there a possibility for discord to natively embed .svg files as both emotes & attachments? (or is it utterly stupid of a suggestion? excuse me if there's something i've missed.)

I would love for this to be implemented, it would allow much greater freedom when creating emotes!

It's definitely possible to do, but would require a lot effort due to the amount of validation required to prevent abusive uploads. For example, you can embed images and other objects in SVGs, so that would need to be stripped out. You would also need to probably limit the amount of entities in the SVG itself so as not to bombard the CPU of users. There are SVG Sanitizers that could be used to help with this.
Nevertheless, there are probably other security risks. Research would need to be done to ensure they do not compromise their application.

GitHub repos are able to display animated SVGs: https://github.com/nbedos/termtosvg
I don't think it is a security or technical issue if done properly.1
