Compact mode is less compact.
The extra space between messages within a group causes less messages to be shown at once, running counter to the point of compact mode. Additionally, the removal of the subtle lines between groups makes it that much harder to read. An option to adjust space between individual messages (including options smaller than what we have now), as well as the ability to toggle separations is in order.

When i first saw the update i physically cringed at the change.

Please restore the old compact view. The new one is completely unreadable because of no separation of message groups.

I agree, here's an image from an IRC chat. Look at how the usernames are separated in a tab of their own - making the actual messages start in the exact same positions, rather than be all over the place according to username length. Easy fix, but will make readability that much better.
