Constructive critismism on Minimal UI changes
I understand as a team, you want to keep the app looking up to date, and clean, without any clutter, but updates like these are often unneeded. Little details changing constantly are jarring for users. By trying to 'Tidy up' you've made the layout more cluttered, and the whole experience a lot less smooth.
Here are some general thoughts on some recent changes that I've seen from many users, only explained a bit more in hopes the team will be understanding of the outside POV:
- Keep reactions menu to a minimum. The new one isn't convenient, it's distracting and adds more content to the page which isn't necessary. Adds no actual new function, and with it's placement, it's hard to tell what message you're reacting to if it's one of multiple in a block.
- Add back the separation bar between messages. It breaks up the page, and makes it easier to tell messages and users apart. It now fells very clunky, and disorganized in comparison. Regular discord now feels like compact discord. Harder to read for many users as well.
- Get rid of message highlighting on scroll over. This is another feature that could be a nice option, but adds no actual functionality, and is another reading obstacle for some. It has no purpose other than highlighting a specific message, which is distracting, and again, adds something unnecessary to the page.
- Add an option to disable the ACTIVE NOW bar in the Friends tab. It takes up a pretty large portion of the screen, and many users don't care to see it. It adds more unneeded content to another page.
- The New Messages tag seems to be a pretty big complaint from a lot of users as well, although not as much as these other features. It's both less visible, yet more distracting at the same time. Not terrible, but needs adjusted.
So in general, this update added a lot of things that were unnecessary and take up extra space, or take away things that were needed to break up the space. The nicest thing about Discord's UI was it's balance between being minimal, functional, and clean. Adding visual features with no use- like large scroll over reaction menus and highlighting- take away that clean, smooth feel. If it doesn't serve a purpose that hasn't already been implemented, or requested a million times over, than it probably isn't needed. And if it does serve a purpose, but not one that is necessary and wanted by a majority of users, than give an option to disable it from the beginning. 90% of the user complaints and feedback about the UI changes could be resolved by doing simply that.

Thanks for typing this all in a super cohesive manner.
Just wanna add:
A while back Discord Devs reduced the amount of spacing between messages sent by the same user. This made everything very nice and compact. It's been reverted and now they're spaced out again. Would like to see that reverted too. Using the option in Appearance to change "chat font spacing" doesn't accomplish anything. It just scrunches everyone's icons together.7 -
I personally disliked that change because the text weight, and fonts for text styles were changed as well. I think in general some better options for text and message spacing/fonts/highlights, ECT would resolve most of these issues. Give some options for customization instead of putting everyone in one box fighting over which is better. Everyone's preferences are different, but one things for sure, none of us want our screen crowded with unneeded and obstructing features.

I have to admit I absolutely HATE this new update, and was going to just go outright to complain, but thank you for actually putting it down in a constructive and positive way because I despise this update far too much to really put it into coherent thoughts without sounding like an asshole.
These new features make it so much more difficult to use discord, they react tab thing is honestly HUGE and I would love to be able to get rid of it entirely I much preferred the older version.
There's also this weird ugly bar next to the text input box now too and I don't see any reason for it to be there.. it just looks unnecessary and cluttered.
