Sidetone on All Devices
There have been a few request of this feature in the past on this forum, but none have been very comprehensively detailed so I would like to create this and hope that it gets pushed up to be added asap as a feature.
The feature in question is referred to as sidetone. For more information, you can read the Wikipedia article here. TLDR: Sidetone is when you can hear yourself speak back from the headset. Some people find it annoying, but it overall is necessary to bring discord to the place where it can be used for more advanced applications than it currently is. Here are the benefits to using sidetone and having it as a feature
- It provides instant feedback on your voice level. The reality of the situation is even if you see you are unmuted, you can't really tell if your voice is actually what is being transmitted over the call. Sidetone allows you to check and hear exactly what the other call members are hearing from you, greatly reducing confusion.
- It removes the question of if you are muted or not. In many situations people can either forget if they are or are not muted within the call. This can greatly hinder communication if the mistake is made either way. The sidetone provides instant feedback to their current mute status.
I am really hoping that this feature can be implemented on as many devices as possible for Discord ASAP. It really is not a complex thing since it is just routing the audio that was picked up from the microphone back into the headphones and it would add way more functionality to the product. I personally would pay a hefty subscription fee to have this feature available to me. I would love to be able to use discord in live production environments to communicate with my camera crew and different video switcher and replay operators, but until this feature is implemented I am not sure that will be possible.
