Keep camera on while app is minimised (android)
-
Yes. My friend got this in his update a week or two ago, I got this in my update yesterday. We clock up a lot of hours in video chat, and when we're using our mobile apps will sometimes need to minimise Discord to do other things on our phones. We have been finding it really irritating that the camera cuts when this happens, and the camera now also cuts while screen sharing. I understand that this may be done to reduce either a) internet use/reduce the load so that other apps have a faster connection or b) to reduce battery consumption, but I have specifically planned for both of these things and have fast chargers everywhere and an unlimited high-speed data plan. I would like either for this to be returned to the way it was or for there to be an option to allow camera use constantly, especially considering, as stated by OP, the mic is still being accessed by Discord constantly, even when muted and minimised, so there is no way you can say it's not possible.

An option would be preferred - it does drain the battery a lot to have the camera on constantly but it ultimately should be left up to the user.

Agreed - the camera shuts off when the phone screen is locked or when switching to other apps, and that shouldn’t happen (it didn’t happen before this latest Android update).

Update from previous post - I've raised an issue and it seems it is definitely not supposed to be happening. They are looking into the cause of this.

I really hope that they bring back the original functionality or at least a setting that allows it. My Girlfriend and I are long-distance and we use it as a means to hang out with each other. So even when one of us is playing a game on the phone or doing anything on the phone that requires us to minimize Discord, the other can still see and whatnot.

@blu, I raised the same issue with Discord, and they told me that it was indeed working as intended to reduce resource usage. They said I had to upvote suggestions if I wanted them to change anything about this issue, since "feedback contributes greatly to our decision-making."

Yes, likewise, they kept telling me to upvote suggestions even after telling them I made a suggestion. I couldn't get a human response.
Resource reduction is nice, especially for data. However, disabling our webcams when we minimize the app is hurting the experience of the other participants.
If they want to reduce resource usage, they could avoid sending camera streams TO participants with the app minimised. After all, just because I can't see other call participants shouldn't mean they can't see me.

I mean in all reality if they truly want to save resources they could focus on streamlining the data and resources being used instead of reducing. Make things more efficient instead of removing them completely.

Yes, this 'feature' is annoying and horrible, I am sure literally everyone who uses video calls absolutely hates it. Degrade instead of upgrade.
