Discord needs dynamic competitive board options for pvp communities that are easy to edit/update
Please read this before deleting it due to the links posted. I apologize for posting these links if it something I am not supposed to be doing, but I didn't see any other way of explaining what I needed to explain here.
For over 20 years in various forums, players have been using various self-made leaderboard rankings systems to devise competitive standings for games that did not have built-in ranked queue systems or built-in leaderboards. A good example would be d2jsp.org. Here in this link you can view a deep history of such leaderboards relating to Diablo 2, a game that had pvp but no built-in ranked systems -> Legit Dueling - d2jsp
We also have other sites that were devised to help with general tournament brackets for these older games that did not have built-in ranking systems, such as challonge.com -> Tournament Bracket Generator - Challonge
Not only do people still play these older games that require 3rd party site usage to maintain competitive standings, but even some newer games still have pvp that is missing built-in in-game competitive standings, which still demands the use of 3rd party site usage for community driven competitive standings. A good example here would be Guild Wars 2 where although they have built-in leaderboards & queue systems for multiplayer matches, they do not have built-in systems for 1v1 matches. Recently I have been using Discord for a community driven project to track 1v1 competitive standings in Guild Wars 2 for the reason that it is something we cannot do in-game. This is the link to our Discord: QSt8PQvGag Please take a look at the process of what I am doing here, before reading further.
My main problem as the moderator of this project is that I have no way to grant access for anyone else to directly edit my posts which list the ranked standings of our competitive board, so it ends up being just me that does almost all of the updating. I have one person who has "updater" privileges granted, but the best I can do to arrange this is to allow him to post new posts in the leaderboards, under my posts. I have no way to allow him to edit my posts. Without going into too much detail, I can say that it can make things messy.
What we need in Discord is some way to declare that a particular channel is a "competitive board". Then we need a new type of permission that allows any person with that permission to be allowed to edit anyone's posts in that competitive board but no where else that is not listed as a competitive board. In our case here, this would allow me to grant updater privileges to many other trusted players so more people could help update the actions & results & standings. This would be extremely convenient to be able to do.
Ideally if Discord wanted to take a step further in design, if there were a way to paste in a dynamic competitive board with standings like this, where we could simply click and drag names over other names to swap their positions after matches are complete, this would be incredibly convenient for pvp communities running these kinds of projects. As of now, we have to click edit and type out every change, which is a hassle to have to do. When people sign-up or drop we have to edit everything, it is a hassle with Discord's current design. A few simple implementations could make such projects so much easier.
Going even further, it would be amazing if Discord implemented a challonge.com like bracket seeding system as well. This way when we run focused tournaments rather than casual standings, players don't need to go to several different websites to make several new accounts with several different verification processes to even be able to compete, which creates disinterest in participation. If Discord had this feature, it would be so much easier to stage community driven tournaments with higher participation rates, because everyone already uses Discord, they like to use Discord, and they want to use Discord. As a moderator of such projects, it would be so much easier to be able to use the platform of Discord alone for such functions as what challonge.com offers, rather than needing to convince them to sign-up & use something like challonge.com. Which keep in mind, I am doing all of this through our Discord, which we are all already signed up for and using.
What players need is one place to go that offers all of these features, instead of a dozen different places to go that divides all of these features, which again is a hassle and it discourages the participation rates of community driven tournament like this. Discord is already there, it's already the preferable communication hub for gamers, it just needs these features.
Something for the staff to think about.
Thanks for reading, and cheers.
