Why can't we suppress everyone and here on a CHANNEL basis? Or override from the server level?

I'm in a server where certain CHANNELS are essential and I need to be alerted with the red number alert. However there are many CHANNELS within the server which I do not need to see as a red number alert.  Currently I can suppress everyone and here on the SERVER level, but then those CHANNELS do not alert me, even if I tell it to alert me. I don't want just a noise or the white arrow, i need the red number.  If I leave notifications on for the server and mute the channel, it does not do what I need. I still get the red number alert even though I have it muted.  

Why is there no way to accomplish this? I've read online people have complained about this for 5+ years. Has anyone found a valid work around?
