Thin, mobile-like layout on desktop to allow any window size
Currently, Discord has a minimum window width. That's how wide the window should be to be able to fit the main chat area and all 3 sidebars.
I wish I were able to shrink the window further. I use an app called Caprine for Facebook Messenger chats on desktop, and it allows me to shrink it to a very thin size, where I have it use the left 20% of my screen, where I can always keep an eye on it while doing other things. I wish Discord allowed me to do the same. Then I could have my 2 main chat apps in a compact area of my screen and see what's going on in them without having to switch.
It would be possible to have pretty much any window size. As you reduce it, sidebars would hide into the sides and would slide out by pressing the right button. The interface would pretty much be the mobile one, but adapted to work without having to swipe in from the sides to reveal the sidebars.

Agree wholeheartedly, Discord is a space hog on the desktop. Even with an extra monitor all that it can comfortably display is discord or the other couple windows I have up, but not together. I just want to monitor the chat without the other sections, why cant we just reduce the sidebars like Eiri suggests?
