Guilds need better embeds!
Necessary foresight
Current embed designs could become a future problem, and are currently forcing staff on servers to make a difficult choice when moderating embeds.
Most servers have some iteration of the following rule: Do not advertise other servers here, if you want to do that use the proper channels or ask the server staff first.
The dilemma of whether or not to let a post stay is a difficult one in a lot of situations, and as humans we are limited to not being able to verify if it was posted in good intent. Anyone having this rule in place obviously don't want clickable invites on their members screens for sure, yet here we are.
Embeds
And then came the embeds. Did you know that between devices there is no consistent way of displaying embeds? Somebody posted a YouTube video in a server i moderate recently, and as i've always seen them i got the description of the video, then the thumbnail of it and the link in a text format.
In the description was a discord server link however, and i decided to delete it.
Assuming this was how it was for everyone i would not expect anything to be made of it, but it turns out that between devices this is not the uniform way of displaying it. I have a Huawei P10, and am seeing descriptions. Others had an Iphone and could not see the description, and some even had a Razer phone, and could also not see the embeds.
Proposals
We need ways of dealing with embed descriptions. A few proposals:
- Discord automatically detects if the description contains a discord server invite and somehow removes the description from the embed.
- Discord universalizes how embeds work
- Discord grants guilds the ability to choose if they want descriptions in their embeds or not
- Discord grants users the ability to turn on embed descriptions
The reason why i am bringing this up now is because a lot of servers use this type of no advertising policy, and a grey area for staff teams appear whenever someone posts a video but with a link in the description that is visible in the embeds.
Why Discord must act
I think it is better if Discord settles this issue by granting some way of solving the need to have a grey area in the first place. Because the issue lies with intent, and we don't wanna screw our users over either.
Why we can't outsource this to other bots is because that is also screwing users over. If a bot detects an invite its only action is like a moderators, to screw the user over as well.
What can YOU do
The best you can do as a user when you see this is spread it to to other server staffers you see. We want this to grow but not get too beknownst to people as the information undoubtedly will cause a ruckass for servers for a short while.
The post needs proper sharing and upvotes to garner attention. You can also show that much mode effort and dedication by making a comment and leaving your suggestions.
This is how we vote, this is how we must do this.
