User profile invisible or offline?

I don't know why but I'm curious on what this means. Can someone explain about the difference in the profile pictures, the other two are darkened while the top user is a bit light?

    The ones that show up bright are your friends, and dimmed are not (but you might be in the same group chat).

    Every user in that picture is actually offline, what i'm confused about is why is it that some of them are bright while the others are not. I was suspecting if those who are bright are just invisible but it's not like that too since some of those who are dimmed I tried to experiment on were invisible instead of offline.
