[Security Suggestion] Allow Admins to decide on "DMs privacy" set per default for joining users.
Hello everyone,
I was just talking about this potential feature with a friend and we concluded it could be a really good one. So here I am :)
So, what's that all about?
Everything is in the title. We all probably already received an unsolicited DM from users or even scammers (or hacked accounts) on a random server. as an admin/mod, I'm concerned that a lot of users (mostly the younger ones) don't take the necessary time to change the privacy toggle on every server's options, allowing an opportunity for scammers to trick them into stealing/hacking/other their accounts or just data.
So here's the idea: Instead of having DMs opened by default upon joining a server, why wouldn't the admin set if, yes or no, the incoming users will have their inbox reachable by anyone per default depending on how he feels is the most appropriate. Of course, users could change it anytime & as they wish using the privacy option already available in the client.
This setting would only impact the incoming users on the server, and wouldn't affect users already present.
F.A.Q
- Why would admins decide on the default setting of a user, and not have the user decide for him/herself?
Good question. Not all servers would need to have their DMs turned off. For example :
- A friend-only server wouldn't require such high security, and the admin could feel like leaving the DMs open per default wouldn't cause any issue.
- However, a community server with a lot of users would most likely feel like disallowing DMs from user to user (if they're not in each other friend list.)
If this setting was placed in the user's hand, the option chosen would be the same everywhere, careless of the kind of server it could be.
- Where would it be located / What would it look like?
I would place it under the "Overview" category in the server's settings, right underneath the "Default Notification Settings". To allow everyone to see for themselves, here's a maquette I've done with my poor Photoshop skills.
Edit : Seems like images are having a hard time to be uploded. I therefore uploaded them in a third party, available here : https://ibb.co/qYFJwXf

If you have any other concerns/questions, reply to this post, I'll gladly extend my thoughts on this matter. If you like the idea, don't forget to vote for it in order to make community servers safer for everyone. I do believe that with the recently-added feature "Content Moderation", this will really lower the risks as well as the opportunities for scammers to do what they do.
Until next time,
