Prevent Servers from Overriding Notification Settings
As of writing this, the Chainsaw Man discord was briefly taken over by an ex-moderator, and part of what they did is change the notification settings from "Only @mentions" to "All Messages". This change propigated to all users that did not manually override their notification settings, so tens of thousands of users subsequently were being pinged by all new messages on the server.
According to a server's "Default Notification Settings", it says the following:
This will determine whether members who have not explicitly set their notification settings receive a notification for every message sent in this server or not.
While it doesn't explicitly say this, it suggests that the default functionality is to override the notifications settings. Why this is a thing? I don't know
While yes, this was an abuse of power and rarely ever happens, I believe that a feature should exist to prevent this ping from even happening in the first place, further reducing the effectiveness of hate raids like this.
Suggested Feature:
Discord users client-side should have a global setting to "Prevent Servers from Overriding Notification Settings" that defaults to "Enabled".
This setting would prevent server owners from retroactively applying a notification change to users, especially as it applies to All Messages.
Alternative Suggestions:
- Compromise: Allow this setting to apply to servers trying to apply "All Messages" and set it to "Disabled" by default.
- Prevent Community Servers from setting "All Messages" for their notification type
- Prevent servers of a certain size from setting "All Messages" automatically
