Better social accounts integrations
What?
Nowadays, Discord allows you to connect accounts from ten different platforms. However, eight of these connections haven't got any particular use besides displaying where else can you be found on the Internet. It is a real shame as some of these could definitely use deeper integrations than that, making Discord even more open to several types of communities as well as easier and more seamless to use.
These ten platforms pretty much are all over the place. You can connect accounts from a platform used to keep track of your neatly tidied code (pretend it's true), or some used to watch kittens sleeping, several ones to play games with your friends, or even one used to groove to music (Tidal support when). Two of these have really nice integrations with the platform that would be interesting to have on other platforms.
Spotify, Twitch, and Xbox are the three outsiders in this list. With all three of them, you can display a different status from the usual game activity or rich presence from your favourite trucking simulator game. Spotify will show what songs you are listening to in real time, and if you have a premium subscription you can even invite people to listen to your banging tunes with you, or even join other listening parties. As with Xbox, people will then be able to know what games are you playing while sitting on your couch. For Twitch, people will see if you are streaming and what are you streaming with a neatly done status. However, this one could go further than that.
How?
Currently, server owners have to use bots or webhooks to notify their community of new events on their social accounts. Some chose to go the DIY route. By having deeper integrations with these accounts, people won't need to do any of these anymore!
For instance, with YouTube, server owners could assign a channel that will be used to notify people of newly published videos. With Twitch, they could do the same thing but by alerting people that their favourite speedrunner is streaming. Or, with GitHub, developers could display newly pushed commits in a channel, and show newly published releases to their community on another channel.
Why?
Discord is becoming more than a new way to connect with people. Many different types of communities have grown on the platform in the past five years: musicians, game developers, schools, streamers, youtubers, illustrators, writers... The list is endless. All of this is recognised by Discord as it is shifting away from its "gamer" type of marketing and presentation, without forgetting its roots nonetheless and keeping the goods present.
To reflect these changes and that evolution of the platform, having more options to play with as well as more platforms to connect accounts to would be more than welcome.
As time is becoming more and more important in our daily lives, no matter what kind of field we are working in, having simple options to use would greatly help having more time to spend working on your next game, your awesome song, or feeding your kitten who's been asking for your attention while you were finishing this "one last game". Setting up bots can be tedious for some, and not all bots are good at the task: most free ones aren't so good, and the great ones require a paid license. Webhooks could also be used, but they aren't easy to use for many users. There still is the option of publishing new messages yourself, but it is more time consuming and can be distracting.
Anything else?
To reflect these evolutions in userbase and communities even more, there are several other platforms that could be added to connections:
- DeviantArt
- ArtStation
- Behance
- Dribbble
- Soundcloud
- Bandcamp
- Tidal
- Gumroad
- Etsy
- Gitlab
