Alerts when active window

I'm running into a situation where I will have discord running in a VM on one virtual desktop, and if it's the active window in that VM, it doesn't make an alert sound, so I won't see messages that come in while I'm not actively looking at the VM. Is there a way to make the desktop app always make the alert sound, even when it's the active window?
