Ping Restriction Server Settings Proposal
Hi, when there are important people on Discord Servers, especially on partner servers and generally large servers, it is possible to ping them; my concern is not directed towards the user who gets pinged because I hear they can turn it on/off. My concern is for the member who pings the important person.
The Problem: Public Humilation
Currently, if a user pings a person who shouldn't be pinged (whether accidentally, carelessly, or intentionally, or whatever reason), not only does the ping still get sent, but the server managers have to set up these bots or human moderators to remove it immediately, and in some cases even punish the pinger, publicly humiliating them. That, unfortunately, seems to be the best option they have to discourage members from pinging specific people. In my opinion, that isn't very pleasant for the pinger.
My proposed solution: Internal Server Ping Restriction Settings
What if the Discord team implemented optional server settings for server managers to restrict specific people, roles, and role members from getting pinged and set a maximum limit to how many people can get pinged? Server managers could also set various restrictions for different roles. (Ex. A moderator has permission to ping the person, but a normal member doesn't)
My favorite part of this proposal is how restricted pings get handled: If a user pings someone they're not allowed to ping, or if they exceed the maximum amount of mentions, the message can still get sent, but the restricted pings don't work, and only come out as plain text. I highly believe that this would remove the need to set up bots and assign mods to delete pinging messages and punish the pingers. Not only would the humiliation greatly reduce, but the user can learn much more peacefully not to ping someone they shouldn't.
Lastly, this feature would be completely optional, so if server managers do not want to use this feature and continue using bots and assigning mods instead, they absolutely can.
Thank you for reading through this, and I hope that it helps the Discord community become stronger.
