Feature Request - More granular support for pinging roles
Hi there. If this isn't the right place to post this, please let me know. I'm also aware that there have been many similar threads, but the solution so far has been insufficient.
The problem:
- We have people joining and spam-pinging certain roles.
- We need to have the roles ping-able because our bots and users with the role need to be able to ping it.
- The users with the role cannot have the ability to ping everyone.
- We can't set up a bot to mute/ban people who ping the roles because the bot can't reverse the pings and notifications.
With the current way the roles work, we can either:
- Only let admins ping the role (this would be a hassle to get an admin to ping the role every time).
- Let people with the role ping everyone (also not great).
- Leave it as-is.
We need some way to control which roles can ping other roles, but we'd appreciate any solutions you have. This is a major problem for us.
Thank you.

So I think there COULD be a workaround to this problem using a bot: when the command is executed (ex: !ping randomrole) the bot checks for the sender's role and using a database or a hardcode, prevent the bot from actually pinging. Then make the bot admin so that it actually works. Never tested it but might work. A full example of this would be:
[User]
!ping Gamer[Bot]
@Gamer, [User] has pinged you!
OR
[Bot]
You do not have the permission to ping this role! Please refer to a server administrator if you think this is a mistake.
Again, I have never tested it but might work.

Yeah, we're already working on a bot to do something similar, but a built-in solution for this would be so much nicer.

I agree, as this is only a workaround and a very overly complicated stuff to configure and use. Though, while waiting for an update, we can't do anything and this is sadly the best we'll get. I bet at the very moment you and your team are done coding this bot, an update doing exactly that will release :L

Why add features when you guys will do it for them?

Because the bots me and 9yz are working on would be with a hard code, which means we would need to create a new one for each and every server, which is obviously not an option. With a built-in system, not only would it be easier to use both for the admin and user, but it would be one work that serves everyone.
