Read message feature needed
I feel that I'm being ghosted by someone on discord & can't get any minor Intel of them such as if they read my messages or not & can't tell what is actually going on the other side of the screen. I fully understand this isn't healthy but knowing this person was my priority to know them & now adays in these modern days it's corrupted & everyone is scared to show themselves even in confined groups in video games such as VRchat & Discord

Howdy Joedomenech,
I hope you're doing well and I am sorry that you have experienced this, I have had this happen to me as well once. While it may seem like a useful feature at first, I believe it could actually be harmful to the platform and our community.
One of the core strengths of Discord is its emphasis on privacy and control over one's online presence. The current system allows users to engage in conversations without the pressure of constantly being monitored or feeling obligated to respond immediately. It creates a more relaxed and casual environment where people can communicate at their own pace.
Introducing read receipts would fundamentally change this dynamic. It could potentially create a culture of instant responses and raise expectations for immediate engagement. Discord's charm lies in its ability to foster genuine conversations and meaningful interactions, free from the pressures often associated with real-time messaging platforms.
Moreover, read receipts could lead to misunderstandings and hurt feelings. Not everyone is available 24/7, and we all have different priorities and responsibilities outside of Discord. When someone sees that their message has been read but receives no response, it might lead to assumptions and unnecessary tension. It could inadvertently put pressure on individuals to explain their lack of response or make excuses, adding unnecessary stress to their Discord experience.
I believe maintaining the current balance of privacy and flexibility is crucial to preserving the unique character of Discord. It allows us to engage with each other comfortably and encourages open communication without the fear of judgment or the expectation of constant availability.
Take care and have a great day!
Best Regards, Haunt
