The "DID YOU KNOW" splash screen appears and then disappears way too fast
When launching the Discord app from a macOS desktop, "DID YOU KNOW" splash screen appears and then disappears way too fast.
For those who have reading challenges, the “DID YOU KNOW” splash screen appears and then disappears way too fast. For those of us with fewer or nil reading challenges, unless one is paying struct attention to the app starting at quickly reads the that that follows, one will miss the text that follows.
The text that follows the “DID YOU KNOW” splash screen often has a useful hint, such as some useful keyboard shortcut that would be helpful to know. However even without reading challenges, the ability to understand some key sequence and what it does is extremely challenging to read, let alone understand.
In the cybercafe that I was in, I selected 5 people at random with a challenge. I'd buy them a free coffee if they could correctly repeat what was below the “DID YOU KNOW” splash screen. These were people with laptops who, presumably, had some reasonable level of skill in reading a screen. I took a photo of the splash screen while it being shown. I gave them each 3 times. While one person got close on their 3rd try, none could correctly recite what followed the “DID YOU KNOW” splash screen. OK, that was a “non-scientific” test, but it does suggest that reading and understanding the hint is a challenge to a fair number of people.
For people with reading challenges, we believe the “DID YOU KNOW” splash screen text would be nearly impossible for them to read.
Now we understand that adding a delay to launching the Discord app on macOS, just to read the text, might be unwelcome to many. So here are 3 suggestions:
- Add a user configuration to require a key press, such as the RETURN key, to advance beyond the “DID YOU KNOW” splash screen where the default would be to not require a key press.
- When the Discord app starts, repeat the text of the hint that was displayed below the “DID YOU KNOW” splash screen, just above the “Active Now” section that appears on the right side.
- Add some key press sequence to pop up a random hint, that when pressed requires a button press to dismiss.
