New Desktop/Browser UI "Customization" Features
I've made posts about the UI before (especially for 2023's mobile UI update) and I'm back with another. This is actually miserable. Arguably, not as devastating as the Mobile UI update was, but now with this change I've had more issues regarding readability particularly. Calling this update “customizable,” is a joke. I'm stuck with more features and changes that affect me in ways that I am unable to do anything about. This is especially problematic because I am on a laptop, which has a smaller screen and is impacting my ability to read text.
Issues with Readability
- Text is smaller (or appears to be) to accommodate the new permanent reminder of what server you're in. (Why do I need to know what server I'm in without just looking to the sidebar?) At the very least, if this is truly such an issue for users, make this permanent server name toggle-able!
- Furthering this issue with the perma-name is the fact that the channel names are ALSO at the top of the page, gives the same area less readability and adds to the visual noise of looking at a server!
- The user bar in the bottom left is now OVERLAPPING my server icons. This is more cluttered, and arguably makes it less readable. Again, I bring up the issue of increased visual noise, because if visual noise was so significant for them to bring these customizable changes, why are they adding in features that make it actively worse?
-Also, server icons are SUBSTANTIALLY SMALLER? If this was again, a changeable feature, I'd have no issue (also, why are they square?)
- The slider for the channel actually decreases the readability of channels and text, primarily because you have to change it (the slider) every time you tab into a new server. Maybe this is matter of personal preference, but as I'm in a lot of servers with different naming conventions, this issue is annoying at best, illegible at worst.
- Inability to alter text sizes decreases the readability, for obvious reasons. I assumed that an update so focused around legibility would have tackled such an issue, but I guess people with laptops or monitors with small resolutions still don't exist. This is such (to me) a simple feature to include, but I'm not a programmer, so maybe it's more complex to implement. Regardless, if you're going to force shrink down my texts to accommodate for obnoxious new features and not allow me to turn them off, at least let me increase my text size! (And don't suggest me changing my text size locally, the point is for this to exist INSIDE Discord natively.)
I would have 0 issues if these things were ACTUALLY CUSTOMIZABLE LIKE THE UPDATE ARTICLE CLAIMS! “All of these updates are meant to enhance legibility, reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed by visual noise, and maintain consistency across desktop and mobile devices.” Also, the bit about maintaining consistency across desktop and mobile… yeah.
TL:DR Discord saying that they're “adding customization features” in by locking everyone into a different UI with it's own (limited) features is like rearranging someone's house, saying they can repaint the walls whenever, and bolting the furniture down so they can't move it.
