Add this feature as a channel type maybe? We now have text and voice channels, I don't think it'd be too complicated to have a specific channel for threaded messages.

@Dyzalonius is that a mockup, or is that something that's actually available for testing?

    @DC Sadly enough it’s just a mockup I made a little over 1 year ago.. ☹️

@dyzalonius what if everyone on this thread were to post this mockup all around, saying how it looks like discord is adding threads! Could we shame them into action?

We couldn’t. My proposal (posted here months ago) is that messages get a new “parentMessage” field to track threads. All messages get posted to the feed in chronological order, but have an indication it is part of a thread. You can then click to filter the right sidebar to show just the messages in that thread. This would make it easy to see the order of messages while still being able to track individual conversations. **Should** also be a minimal change to existing format for bot integration.

KramRM, unless I'm understanding, that doesn't solve the "constantly being notified about conversations I'm not a part of" aspect like Slack-style threading would.

Personally I don’t like Slack threads. They aren’t visually distinct enough and I often miss them. I’m drawing my reference from the Mattermost chat platform.

Please edit your original post to include the image or image link posted by @Warlow :

This gives people window shopping for features
a great visual for what this feature thread is proposing,
ideally landing votes we wouldn't otherwise get.

@itskando sadly i deactivated that account a while ago, I can't edit the post any longer

Hi, I keep looking on the horizon of the changelog patiently expecting some mention of Message Threads as we know them and love them from other chat software... Please please, our DnD group chat would be so much cleaner if we could just add those hundreds of lines about rule discussion to a thread instead of scrolling forever (I know there is pinning but that doesn't rly solve the issue. Thanks for consideration, your nerdGroup

@KramRM Seems like you're saying threads shouldn't be implemented at all. But couldn't we actually do a *better* job than Slack, by making them *more* visually distinctive?

    1
  • KramRM

No and yes. I want threads, but done differently than Slack.  I still want everything chronological, but with the ability to view a thread as if it was its own channel.

  • princeftanx

Oh, I see what you’re saying! So more like Gmail does it, where you have a choice between a chronological and a “conversations” view.

I'm tired of whatever I posted on discord chat get lost after some time, with or without any reply. So I googled for threaded chat for discord and I get sent here.

That would be nice having it like that @Dyzalonius , but still after more people chat below it, time after time it will still get lost. Unless it has a THREADED VIEW for the chat channel, so it will list Threads only like a Forum, sorted by threads with last posted message put on top or whatever sort filter is used. That way chat can still go on as usual, but we can still find threads in threaded view.

So for a casual conversation we just chat like usual, but for a chat topic that we want to be able to continue at later time and waiting for more people to elaborate, we posted the message as a New Topic for a THREAD. If it is just a one time conversation that will be finished in one sitting or just a few minutes or short time, having it like yours is ok without being posted as a thread, but for a conversation on a topic that needs long discussion with more people to participate it can be alive as needed until it gets buried when noone replies, just like a forum.

Also a bookmark or favorite feature to save some threads in would be nice so we can just browse from there.

Have to admit that this is a really cool feature and I personally also wanted it to be implemented, but consider that discord's message and channel structures are mostly inherited from IRC which do not have topic threads in mind (and so I also doubt whether discord is going to adapt this completely distinct messaging structure). Possibility, there are, but the final question here is that, Does Discord really NEED this feature, and had the users prepared for it

@mio9, from the number of folks I've seen say this is blocking them from moving to Discord from Slack or causing them to move to Slack from Discord, yes, I'd say it's veering into NEED territory for Discord. This doesn't take anything away, it adds. There are entire servers that I totally ignore that I would probably actually hang out in if threads were a thing.

@mio9 306 thread follows, 1400 upvote and 10 pages of discussion and requests for this feature in this chat says discord NEEDS it, and users are prepared for it for sure as the design proposed doesn't require users to do much for preparation.

@MiO9, just because threads could be implemented doesn't necessarily mean users need to get used to a change or servers would go through a transformation. A simple solution is to have a Thread Text Channel and a Regular Text Channel. Upto the server admins which channels they want threads in, if at all. Giving users the option is the way forward.

"A simple solution is to have a Thread Text Channel and a Regular Text Channel."

Honestly, if that happens instead of it just being an option to tack onto a chat room, I will be a little frustrated. That would mean I would need to recreate all my chat rooms. I want them all threaded.

Not the end of the world, I will probably go "Argh! Fine!" then take the hour or so it takes to do it and archive my old rooms.

What I meant, was something like it is currently with the NSFW slider on each channel that you can switch on or off at any time.
Threads on/off. When you turn threads off, existing threads would remain but no new ones could be created.

I differentiated because you may opt to have some threaded channels and some regular ones without threads, but there should always be an option to convert from one type to the other.

Slack Threads is only one which then all rooms are stacked on each other that you can expand or collapse to see the threads. Doesn't have to be complicated for each room to be a separate thread channel.

Also, Thread channel would only contain the sub messages that the current user were involved in only, not every threads. So, this way it will not be a huge task for the developers too. For other threads the user can click on the expand button to see the messages at the right side of the screen

Flowdock, as awful as it is, has a good implementation of threads, I think.  Slack's implementation (like all things Slack) is garbage.
