I'd love this feature as well. I dislike waking friends in different time zones whenever I send a message, link, etc.

I think this could work like the italics and bold lettering functions ( *italics* ) only it doesn't work like that and doesn't change message itself just no notification like [no notification].

Yes, I would really like to send a message to ask someone to get back to me when they're not busy. I know that they may not be available now and I don't want to (essentially) ping them. I just want them to see it when they are available again.

Alternatively, could make it so you hold the "send" button for a period of time, such as a few seconds. This is what Telegram implemented as a means of sending messages through groups/DMs as to not cause potential noise if the recipient is in a meeting or sleeping and such

2 years old and still nothing. I'm shocked that this has been around for this long and no one has thought to incorporate this to the app.

watch.out.its.ryan, it's not a command, it doesn't exist which is why we're requesting it with this discussion.

This would be a super handy feature as I use discord for work. I want to send a message on the weekend as a reminder for both myself and the team, but not bother them in their time off!

I always feel the need to say closing statements after saying goodnight, so this would be awesome to have, just to send my friends messages without bothering them and still have them see it whenever they get the chance.

Does kinda sound like it would get annoying though, but maybe not.

Still hasn't been looked at, smh
It's an amazing idea, I'd use it all the time. I have friends all over the world, and I don't wanna be waking them up at 3:30 with whatever random crap I'm messaging them about.

Bumping this thread, because this feature needs to be added.
Discord missing this feature is the only reason that I ever use any other messaging platforms anymore, just to text my friends at night.

This is a really solid idea, I keep having the issue of A) sending the message now and risking waking up my friend across the globe, or B) waiting to send the message, risking that I forget it and guaranteeing he won't see it first thing in the morning...

I have another use case for this. I made a large server for students in my degree. They all loved it because of how organised the channels are.

I kept uploading useful info about the course. Sometimes I would make 5 posts back to back.

People got 5 pings back to back. With info they might already know from somewhere else. This made them quickly mute my server. Now people don't interact as much as I think they would if I had this feature.

I want to be able to make a silent post. It is useful for posts that don't need to be seen by everyone but if anyone needs the info they will know where to look for it in the catagories.

    Please add this feature :)

@Daniel Jordan : I don’t really think this is a use case. It seems you are either @everyone’ing every message on your server (if so, stop that), or your students notification setting is to long for every single comment on the server. I’m guessing it’s the latter, which you can ask each student to modify such that they only get a ping when they are @ mention’ed (includes @everyone, @here and @ any role they have).

The default notification setting for your server is a part of the server settings, and setting it at “notify everyone for every comment” is highly intrusive and not advisable. It seems the option of “notify only @ mentions” is what you want (and it’s also in general the preferable option for most servers).

So yeah - this functionality exists. DM-ing people without sending a notification, however, does not.

    @bgosl

The chats are well organised into catagories. And I told everyone they can mute individual catagories.

There are catagories that are general for everyone in the course. If for example I post info about "how to register for exams." It is impossible for me to know who already has this information from other sources. So I can't specify an @group. The uni is so disorganized that many can't find such information. So many will benefit from the post. But many will see it as irrelevant and then mute the entire server. Because there are too many such posts.

If I could silence such posts then no one would silent the entire server and people who need the info can search for it.

Please Discord. I very often have something that isn’t urgent to say to my friends after they go to sleep and I don’t want to accidentally wake them. I’d still like them to see the message and respond when they get around to it (which would likely be before I get up because we operate on completely different schedules, and when I get up they’re busy with other things) but current methods don’t allow me to do so without also risking interrupting them.

@Daniel Jordan: again, I think you’re going at this backwards.

If your students are getting pings for messages in a specific channel - or every channel, for that matter - that means you are either @everyone’ing everything (doesn’t sound like it, but if so don’t do that), or their notification settings (which is originally set by your server settings) is set to ping for every single message on the server. That’s not really useful in most cases, it’s just overly intrusive and will end up spamming people to the point of them muting the entire server. They could even suppress @everyone, @here etc so that those don’t give them notifications (but show the server as having new notifications for them) - although that’s generally not advisable, since you lose the opportunity to send time-critical alerts.

If you instead have pings set to @mentions, they’ll get pings when you @everyone, @here (if they’re online) or @ a group or individual. Then, as is the case most of the time, you can just send messages without any @ to send it to a channel so that they see it whenever the next time that they open a server. If necessary you could also setup a #annoyncements channel or similar, and tell everyone to never mute this.

I don’t mean to be a drag here, I just think the functionality you specifically are asking for already exists.

@bgosl No, it's a real case. I have the same need. I want my bot to be able to send messages in a channel without users getting the channel notified of new messages. Not with @everyone, but ordinary messages that's silent. They should appear in the feed but not alert the channel that there are new messages.

  • bgosl

@KristianF oh, so you mean without the channel even showing that it has any new messages - so it’s not even highlighted in bold in the channel list (and thus also doesn’t notify those who have notifications for every message in that channel)? Then yes, that feature does not exist. That would only happen today for any users that had muted a channel, and AFAIK you can’t mute a channel server-side (and that’s also not what you want, since other messages should still appear and notify as usual). I personally struggle to see the use for that, but if you have a use case I’ll trust you on that :)

It may be obvious, but aside from using this personally in DMs, that @silent-command should probably be limited by some privileges. Otherwise it’d be a brilliant way to sneak stuff into a server without mods noticing. I also think we might be talking about two commands right now (or at least one with a toggle-option): one that doesn’t notify but still shows that the channel has new messages, and one that doesn’t notify but also doesn’t show the channel as having new messages. But as demonstrated above, there are use cases for both! Discord, pls- this thread keeps growing…

PS: I didn’t mean to be rude or negative in my previous comments btw- I see they were kinda worded like that. Honestly just trying to help and show that maybe the use case that guy described was already possible with today’s features.

    @abgosl I believe that there's a bit confusion above regarding "notification" :)

The function might be limited to bots for my sake. I want to use it for my stock bot where people in a channel ask for the order book, the quote or similar and the bot replys with the data. It's semi interesting for others than the person asking the bot, but not that interesting that I want the channel to show there's new stuff.

@silent or an attribute on the message object would be perfect. And @silent could be restricted like @everyone to avoid the potential problem you are pointing out.

@KristianF OK, I understood what you meant then, just wanted to clarify. I think there’s a use for both versions: no notifications + show as having new messages, and no notifications + show no change. The former was what I was interested in, and you prefer the latter. There should be room for both :)

And yeah, the bot only usage you could obviously just control as you’d normally do, with a @Bots role (or separate roles for each bot, etc).
